Personal Narrative: Achieving My Associates Degree

The career that I would like to pursue would be a geologist or a sustainable development degree, (as I am still deciding), but these careers excite me because they involve the outdoors and ways to help people, the environment, and everything around us. I tried to tackle the college application process as honestly as I could. I knew I was not the smartest or the most talented applicant in a sea filled with thousands of application, but I knew I was unique. There was and still is only 1 me, Brian Bristol, on the entire planet. I used this knowledge to my advantage and did my best to convey my story to each college I applied to. Being transparent throughout the application process is underappreciated among high school students, and the fact that I was able to express myself was looked upon favorably by many colleges.…

As each year in high school progressed, I found myself wanting to acquire more knowledge and learn about the world around me. To accomplish this, I signed up for college level classes. Although the rigor was challenging, I discovered the classes to be interesting as I learned to apply and synthesize what I was learning with my everyday surroundings. In AP Chemistry I was astounded to learn what my very existence was made of, and in AP Environmental Science I am learning of a love for the environment I never knew I had. Science classes as my school have made it possible for me to explore my interests in science and my environment.…

My graduate experience will be light years different then my undergraduate training. I chuckle just contemplating the technological difference alone. Back when I attended undergraduate school there wasn’t the internet, the LoudCloud, e-books, or personal laptop computers. We thought we were “hot stuff” because we progressed from the slide ruler to a state of the art Texas Interment graphing calculator. By the way google informed me that my particular calculator at that time was the first of its kind.…

My college search has brought me to many universities: visiting campuses, and talking to students, alumni, and faculty. While I could receive an excellent education from any of these schools, Notre Dame offers something "more. " I first noticed this something "more" through a contact I made with Kyle Cowdrick, ND class of 2015, who I have been emailing back and forth with over the last year about admissions, Notre Dame, and the college experience. I once asked him why he bothered to use his precious time to mentor me, someone he barely knew before, his answer: "It's the Irish way".…

I don't think my GPA accurately reflects my potential or my abilities because I started college when I was 17 and graduated when I was 21, and as a young person in college I often thought and reasoned like a young person. Having a 3.2 cumulative GPA as my midterm grade is a good start to college, I believe. For the fall semester I am enrolled in Biology 160, Biology 132, Philosophy 112, General Chemistry 101, and University 100 totaling up to fourteen credit hours. Being enrolled in three sciences I do not have the expectation to be a perfect student and have all A’s in those classes simply because those are more difficult classes. For Philosophy 112 and University 100 I do expect to maintain an A throughout the rest of the semester, because my grades are based on participation in activities and assignments.…
