Although that nickname in particular isn’t one a child tends to love, being called “Ava Girl” made up for it. Hearing my second childhood nickname always reminds me of the smell of campfire smoke out in the woods or the sun glistening on the lake …show more content…
Most people would instantly assume something popular like Renee or Marie would fit with Ava. However, I happily told them Katherine filled that spot. Katherine like my grandma, Katherine like my great-great aunt, and Katherine like my cousin. The fact that my middle name carried on a tradition throughout my family finally meant I belonged within something special. My mother had informed me that it had almost been Michele, much to my grandma’s dismay. “Why not Katherine?! I’m her grandma, she should take my name!” Luckily, I would have loved either name but part of me is thankful my grandma decided to put up a fight that

Pacing back and forth, I pondered how our volleyball fundraiser was going to stay afloat. The council was distraught, unable to acquire more teams, with the tournament in two days. With our advisors and the vice principal leaning towards canceling the event, my council had two choices: get eight more teams to sign up or call off the event. Experiences I had working as an apprentice to my brother, James, and my subsequent running away resulted in my finding independence and establishing myself as a cool bean. When I was twelve, I was apprenticed to my brother, James, who was a printer; he started publishing The New England Courant when I was fifteen. Though I wanted to write for the paper, my brother rejected anything I submitted under my own name. Deciding that using a pen name would be the best way to get my writing in the paper, I carefully constructed the persona of Mrs. Silence Dogood, a middle-aged widow who made fun of life as she lived it, when I was sixteen. I scrawled a letter onto parchment and signed it with her name, later slipping it under the door of my brother’s office in…
