Personal Narrative: AP Studio Art: Drawing Portfolio

Decent Essays
Since a very young age, art has always been one of my major interests. I found joy in getting my hands messy with the paint and then transforming a white piece of paper into a something more than that with a rainbow of colors. In school, I always made sure to take all the possible art classes that were available and would fit my schedule. I also began to get more in involved in after school clubs such as the National Art Honor Society and the SmART Club where we did several art projects every week. On my last year of high school I decided to challenge myself and I took AP Studio Art: Drawing Portfolio. Compared to all my other art classes in school, this class gave me more freedom while creating pieces all from the medium I wanted to use and

Whether it is poetry, drawing, or painting, I discovered the importance of self-expression. Being driven away from art, due to focusing on my studies at school, I felt deprived of my artistic side and was eager to create anything I could. I had so much to say and so many ideas to share, and finally I was able to be inspired and work with the beauty around me. This is when my love and appreciation for art took over. I would sit on the dock and pour my thoughts into my green leather notebook.…

College is a life changing investment that prepares for life and career. The vast spectrum of knowledge, skills obtained, and experiences from a college degree more than compensates for the monetary cost of tuition. Creating art is my passion; I have always wanted to become a great artist ever since I was a child drawing on my walls and copying pictures from books. I have devoted my life to improving my talents by illustrating my own stories, practicing drawing daily, and challenging myself to earning my own money doing what I love by drawing commissions. Learning how to communicate through illustration is a valuable skill that will live with me for the rest of my life and progressing my artist career.…

I have been exposed to art my whole life ever since I was a little boy , Mostly when I was young and my sister first acquainted me to it through her drawings. Exiting Pratt Institute with a degree in sculpture into the Big Apple, I held my breath and clutched the edge of my seat. I remembered how confident and prepared I had felt before beginning my college adventure. Having been a part of RAW Art Works for three years before entering Pratt, my RAW family had empowered and gave me skills that I still cherish today. But while studying at school, I quickly realized that the family I had at RAW was not easy to come by or to be recreated. The day I graduated from Pratt, I left feeling incredibly proud of the work and growth I had made as an artist and now young man.…

This is where I began to improve my skill as an artist. I visited some art museums when I went on field trips. I’ve learned that to be good at art, you have to use your creative mind and your personal imagination. It also requires time, dedication, and your love for art. Every time I drew something, it took me to another world; deep into imagination.…

Constantly evolving, constantly transforming. A place where any outsider has to prove themselves before being welcomed with open arms, where fame or riches is not the predominant factor instead communication is the main concern. Art is such a dexterous community, with countless of people from different backgrounds, ideals or beliefs, as a result, it doesn’t belong to only one culture alone and it becomes a form of communication that can reach multiple people regardless of the language boundary that has separated men throughout time and time again. In a sense, I am Alice in the Art world, as a discourse community art has established a part of what I am today by influencing me in my early years, transitioning my life, integrating me into a whole…

I worked in the medical field for twenty plus years, taking care of many patients from diverse populations and with many situations; such as substance abuse issues, homelessness, etc. I became disabled from the field of work but learned a lot about a diverse group of people by asking questions and looking up information to help me care for them efficiently. Recently I acquired a job as a program manager at a women homeless shelter; which is out of my realm of practice, but in four short weeks, I have found it is where I belong. As the program director, I have also had the opportunity to consult others, such as art therapist in my agency and MSW’s in other agencies to help build my knowledge of the population. I have learned that most therapy…

This year art one, or my art class with Mr.Puffpaff, was fun. It was fun for many reasons such as the fact I got to use paints, values, the reflection of light to draw, etc. However, It was also fun because I got to explore my creativity as well as learning how to use the different skills properly. For example, when I did the pop can landscape project I had to overlap them, so I made a huge chandelier out of them, and drew a miniature family at the bottom with pop can furniture. However, I had to overlap them as well as making the size of the pop cans get smaller as it got closer to the top which was challenging for me.…

Seashore, recommended I take AP Studio Art; she taught this class as well, along with many other art classes, so her recommendation was a pretty strong reason as to why I took it the following year. So, once sophomore year came around, I began the most intense, soul-crushing art class I had ever taken. In AP Studio art, you select a portfolio to complete at the beginning of the year and work on it for the entire class; I was immediately told that I should do a 2D-design portfolio as I was far too slow at drawing to do a traditional portfolio. So, in order to churn out art at a quick pace to meet due dates, I took up…

This portfolio in the making for the past 8 weeks has really shown me that my voice is both unique yet very narrow in creativity. The way I look at my past writings tells me that I am into one large open genre: Fantasy. I feel that stories like these are influenced by other stories or games. For example my “Tale” story was going to turn out as a twisted version of “Alice in Wonderland” series, but due to the lack of time and struggles of giving the meaning behind the story it was shortened to just one bit. Both of those pieces so far have definitely been leaning towards that category of fantasy; however I hope to be able to reach to another type of story that is beyond my normal voice when it comes to writing.…
