Personal Narrative: ADEM Is Not A Common Disease

Improved Essays
Two years ago, my boyfriend, who at the time was not my boyfriend, was diagnosed with this very rare disease. At the time he was going through this awful experience, I did not know him and had not even been living in this state. When I moved to Maine and met him, everyone around him had gone through this experience with him. They all knew of this disease and the details behind it. I always felt left out that out of all people, his own girlfriend did not know about what he went though. He still experiences some sensations because of ADEM including a numb feeling in his legs, a droopy eye when he's tired, constant headaches. I feel guilty that I have not taken time to understand completely what he went though. ADEM is not a common disease.

Growing up I loved to watch re-runs of the Addams Family on television. The reason I loved this quirky, yet comical show is clearly in the title. Obviously, the familiarity with the name “Addams” was an instant connection. But really, it was the word “Family”. This macabre and bizarre family was not your traditional television family, and that is what I loved.…

Hey Jax here, I just want to say that if this disease gets to me before a new heart does, then I'm sorry. I'm not going to sit here and get all sappy by saying that I'll miss my family or anything like that because that's a given. I am however, going to tell you what I'm sorry about, and I better get started before I'm too weak to do so. I'm sorry for being too weak to put on my hospital gown without requiring assistance. Alexxis, After reading this summary, I think listening to this podcast would really benefit me! My grandmother that moved in with us about six months ago has Alzheimer's Disease. It's really challenging for her to keep up with her medications and we've found that recently she looks for every excuse to avoid going to the doctor even when she clearly knows she needs to. I think a big component of that is the fact that she recognizes she has trouble remembering things and it must be really discouraging for her. I think the point you made about having them write down main questions that need to be addressed would help her feel like she has some control and ensure she gets the answers she needs.…
