Personal Narrative: ABC Music In Middle School

Improved Essays
Every since 7th grade I was in ABC. ABC is an advance class of orchestra where we play anything but classical music, hence the name. ABC was a class that started before school, and anyone who was in 7th or 8th grade could join. Usually our orchestra teacher was Mr. Hudson but the teacher for ABC was Mrs. Dykman. ABC music in middle school is meant to be harder and faster but at the time the music seemed easier and I was ready for a challenge. Mrs. Dykman told us our 8th grade year that if we wanted a bit more of a challenge we should join ABC in 9th grade. She was telling us that the music won’t be easy but with a little practice we would easily get the music. To properly execute how fun ABC Would be she suggested we should go to some of their …show more content…
Mr. Hudson was kind enough to tell us even if we don’t know if we wanted to sign up we could still get the music just to try it out. The song was had to audition for was Irish Medley. I personally was thinking sweet only one song, but little did i know irish medley had 3 different song in it, with a lot of repeats. I got the music and while I was practicing at my own tempo the music was actually pretty easy. Everyday I would play the song at the beginning and the ending of orchestra and twice when I got home. I perfected all out of tune notes and made sure I had the right bowings. At school my other friends who were planning on trying out suggested we should all play together, I was like sure why not, but once we started playing everyone was going like twice as fast as I was playing. Here is where all the tears came. I stayed after school three days a week and practiced with a metronome everyday, somehow I still couldn’t get the music up to the speed. I tried to be optimist about the situation and told myself at least i have the music memorized, there just wasn’t a way in the world I was going to be able to get the

The group that I will be reviewing in this paper is the student combo that I enjoyed most of all, the group that performed first and was directed by Dr. Routenberg. The group consisted of Andrew Fiorini on the trumpet, Noah Johnson on the trombone, Meghan Walls playing the piano, Andrew Moser on the electric bass, and Collin St. Mary on the drums. Regarding the music…

Emma had left SJN but there were two new fifth graders joining the band, Molly and Elizabeth. It was fun teaching them and hearing them play. About half way through the year, ETSBOA junior clinic came around. ETSBOA junior clinic is a band competition where you go behind a curtain and play a prepared piece of music, your five major scales, the chromatic scale, and sight read, playing a piece of music you have never seen before. My band director had asked me if I wanted to do ETSBOA.…

On May 9, 2015, Garvey’s Advanced Band and Mustang Choir went to the Trills and Thrills Festival at Burbank Middle School. We had to be at school by 7:15 AM since it was our call time, and that was way too early for me since I usually sleep at 12 AM. I was in Advanced Band and I played the clarinet. Of course I was excited to play at the competition, but I was also nervous since we were going to Six Flags afterwards and I had a huge fear of heights.…

I didn’t really love playing and I really hated practicing but I continued with lessons for the next three years. One day my mother and I were visiting our friends, Mrs. Jakes and her daughter Karen. The Jakes had a piano, so my mother asked me to play a song for our friends. I played one of my favorite songs (I had three that I could play really well), the Jakes were impressed.…

Failure is not characterized by what is lost, but instead by the lessons one learns from the experience. An area of my life in which I’ve faced many struggles has been music. Ever since a young age, I have been truly passionate about music; from singing, to dancing, to playing piano and percussion. Nothing makes me happier than succeeding in something I care about, but often it is extremely difficult to achieve musical honors due to the exceptionally talented competition. Two years in a row, I failed to make the Iowa All-State Chorus.…

I joined marching band too, but that's another story altogether. At the end of seventh grade there was no question as to if I would stay with the clarinet or not. Was it really true that we would perform in such a big event? We all looked at our instructor, and his face was enough to tell us that this was no joke. He further explained that three other drumline would be joining us, and that we would begin practice at Center Grove High School in the coming month. When the time came, my friends and I eagerly step foot into a new band room, and perhaps our greatest musical journey began. For many weeks, we continued with business as usual, working to perfect our school’s show for competition.…

As both a male cheerleader and performer, being ostracized is not rare. Overcoming this feeling has helped me realize that cheerleading and musical performances are significant aspects of my identity, as well as some of my best memories of high school. Standing in the exquisite balcony of Carnegie Hall, the rotunda of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Museum, or the wings of a stage in Hershey Park could never prepare me for the rejection I routinely felt throughout high school. Being a male performer, I found myself feeling dismissed by the rest of my school. Nevertheless, my dedication to our music department has contributed to plentiful self-growth, countless performances, awards and accolades, but ultimately it has provided me with outstanding…
