My Transformative Year Essay

2010 is the year that marks as the most challenging and transformative year for me. That year, I find myself living in a domestic shelter in Fayetteville, North Carolina with my mother and my siblings as the results of my mother’s heroic escape from my abusive father. That year, I also realize that I will have to grow up without a male figure. Through the struggles, I have to find out who I am and what I am made of quickly in order to survive. I realize that out of mud, not marble that a beautiful lotus flower grows. Challenges arises but when they are dealt with courage, conviction and a positive attitude, they will be served as opportunities for growth.

My courage comes from watching my mother. She endures 12 years living with an alcoholic husband. There are constant shoutings and screamings in our house. He is abusive towards my mother. In school, I do not get discouraged if I do not get perfect grades the first time. I have the courage to get out of my comfort zone and try again or even try something new. In junior year of high school, I join our school's science olympiad team and win 5th place for one of the events. Having the determination and courage to build things back up from the ground level when they do not work the first time is essential in all career choices. I hope to use my life experiences to become an engineer. To me, building up a beautiful life and building up a beautiful structure requires similar characters in a person.

Mud might have been the circumstances of my life when I grow up. Mud is smelly. Mud is messy. However, I learn that if I can take the mud or the challenges of my life and turn it into something useful, then out of mud, beautiful lotus flowers will grow.
