As I was walking into the Career Center, I heard Mr. Railey tell Tyler, who was a few steps ahead of me in the hall, to take his hat off. Tyler removed his hat and acted as if he was going to throw it to the ground, but instead of throwing his hat he ended up putting it back on his head. Later in class, after Mrs. Linzey was done taking attendance, she asked Tyler to take off his sunglasses. Tyler did not immediately take off his glasses and even began to mumble things under his breath. I believe he took the sunglasses off eventually, but he gave Mrs. Linzey attitude about it and then headed to the shop.
While in the shop, I noticed Tyler holding a piece of metal in his hands as his friend, Colton, proceeded towards cutting the metal with the plasma cutter. Before Colton could actually begin cutting, I piped in and said, “Hey, don’t be dumb” in a ‘you should know better’ tone. I did not mean what I said in a rude manner at all. I was only looking out for their safety along with the other students in the shop, but Tyler instantly started swearing at me before I could explain that what he was doing

Mrs. Linzey had said that someone can get them down with a ladder and pole to bring them closer because the ceiling of the classroom is not sturdy enough to be stood on. Tyler saw a few of the students looking at the gloves on the roof of the classroom and decided that he was going to climb the metal rack next to the window and get the gloves. Some of the students in the shop told Tyler that he should not be climbing the classroom wall because it was dangerous and would get him in trouble. However, Tyler did not listen to any of us and continued to get on top of the classroom to get the gloves. Mrs. Linzey and Mr. Railey noticed Tyler and told him that he needed to get down. Tyler began to get upset, angry and he started shouting cuss

My favorite job by far has been my internship as a career mentor in the Office of Career Development at my school. As a career mentor, my primary duties are to help students with resume/cover letters, job/internship search and just general life goals questions. This internship has made realize why I love working with students. It’s such a great feeling when a student comes and they may be confused about their major or how to make a resume for a job; but by the end of the your time with them, you just see this light bulb go off in their head and they have this look of “I understand”. Even though it may be a very small interaction, I feel like I have made a small difference in their lives and I have helped them somehow.…

Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. In my experience, it was my mentors that made a difference in my career, and prompted me to pay it forward and it is these mentors that I try to emulate in my own mentoring. A mentor serves as a professional role model for the mentee.…

    Quadre Short Story

“Quadre” I’ve always loved children, and I am under the impression that the feeling is mutual, especially in my work in the church nursery, mentor programs, summer camps, and a volunteer trip to an African orphanage this summer. I like kids, particularly younger ones, because they are straight-forward; unconcerned with things like status, appearance, and reality; and have the best senses of humor by accident. Quadre, a young boy I met while volunteering at a school, was no exception to those qualities, and he was especially unique for a few more. He had a knack for getting into trouble and was clearly the class clown, but unlike his peers, Quadre did not like me. Despite my best efforts to show him love and befriend him, he wasn’t having it.…
