The eyes of the parents directed straight towards me, as if I was a threat to their well-being. With the feeling of fear I looked down at the floor and briskly walked to the line to be introduced to my teachers. My hands were shaking and my heart galloping at mach 5. Suddenly the floor became a wall with me on top. I slowly looked up to see a man with a mahogany beard, smiling at me with a sense of accomplishment.…

During my first year at Fulton Middle School, I was in sixth grade. I did not know anyone at the school, except a few people that enrolled in the same tutoring classes with me in the past. On the first day of school, I was extremely nervous. Butterflies flew and writhed around in my stomach for the whole entire day. There was a girl that I befriended immediately as soon as we introduced eachother, and I found out her name was Judy Liu.…

QUESTIONING MY OWN UNDERSTANDING GOING INTO THE RESEARCH Phoebe fell haphazardly into friendship with Allison on the first day of high school. She had been walking confidently in the direction of her next class. Shortly finding herself at the main office, she quickly realised she was completely lost. Unable to spot a single face in the flocks of students flapping past down the corridor, and departed with no other choice, she mustered up the bravery to ask somebody for help. Noticing another four-eyed girl, inconvenienced as she was with big stupid glasses on her face, Phoebe spluttered out an awkward, yet enthusiastic greeting, and babbled about directions to the science labs.…

The rain pouring violently with the sounds of deafening roars. The torrent of cloudburst crashing on top of my mom’s car. The rain is the thundering of God’s anger. The cataract of rain pouring off the car like a river into a waterfall. “I can’t believe we lost,” I fulminated.…

Though I am still young, I believe myself to be incredibly ready for the independence and knowledge that going to the Governor's School will bring. I have always been more mature in my behaviors and mannerisms, which oftentimes makes me feel as if schooling is too easy or boring for me. I would be excited to go to a learning community such as this one that will bring me challenges and allow me to reside with others of my age that also desire a greater learning community. I have been away from home on multiple occassions, including ECU Band Camp, among other summer camps, for a week. I also believe that I have a great independence, and sometimes I crave this independence while at home.…

“Why are we moving?” I whined, “I don’t want to switch schools again.” It was August 2010, and I had just been informed that we were moving again, and no matter what people say, it doesn’t get easier. This was the fifth time I had switched schools in seven years. “It’s a better situation,” my dad said, “It’s forty five minutes closer to my work, and we’ll have an acre of land all to ourselves.”…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…

Senior Year My greatest memory so far in my eighteen years of being on this earth is without a doubt my senior year of high school. It was absolutely unforgettable. My senior year as a whole (which was just last year) was the most fun I’ve ever had in my life and the happiest I have ever been. When I was a chubby little freshman with glasses I thought to myself that high school would be one of the longest time periods of my life and that four years would feel like forty years. But man was I wrong, high school went by in the blink of an eye.…
