The airplane was crowded and unbearable. As if being confined tightly with a bunch of strangers wasn’t enough, I’m extremely motion-sick. I had to keep reminding myself that the grueling plane ride will all be worth it just to see the big, beautiful ocean and to try new, exciting things.
After many hours of travelling, my family and I finally arrived in the Dominican Republic; our luxurious home for the next seven days. It was much hotter than I expected. The sweltering heat caused many passengers to strip off the coats and jackets that they previously needed to keep themselves warm. After stepping off of the airplane, My aunt, uncle, cousin and I then clambered into a shuttle bus that was going to transport us to our resort. When we finally

The enormous cascade of navy blue stretched out in the darkness forever. Delicate waves crashed against the shore one after the other in a beautiful melody. I approached the landscape, trying to take in the wondrous view before me. The sand was white and soft as the finest silk. The moonlight shined over the waves and glittered off of the water like a thousand diamonds. “It’s much bigger than the pictures, isn’t it?” My uncle asked. I couldn’t answer right away. I was so taken aback at the beauty of it that all I could do was whisper, “It’s absolutely beautiful.” My aunt chuckled and said, “Well swimming will have to wait until tomorrow.” Then, we all returned to our rooms to rest for the night. I was so ecstatic about what the next day would bring, that I got little to no sleep that …show more content…
Before I got into the water, I watched the rumbling waves chase small children back onto the shore as they squealed with glee. Seagulls cried overhead and swept down to the sand to scour the beach for their next meal. Although I was overwhelmingly excited to get the opportunity to float in the ocean, there was a small secret that I forgot to mention to my family. I am slightly afraid of the ocean. I’ve always had a fear of ocean creatures, a fear of the unexplored abyss. The sea is so immense that I’m frightened of what could be residing in it. Overcoming my fears, I stepped into the cool, crystal sea. The water engulfed my feet and made me shiver; it was so much colder than the air around us. My cousin urged me onward, so we stepped farther and farther out into the sea. Now up to my shoulders in the cold water, I felt an overwhelming sense of euphoria. My once nervous demeanor was now replaced with the feeling of pure joy. We were rocked back and forth by the welcoming waves. The waves constantly splashed against our faces and the taste of the salty water was

Rachel Carson, the author, starts off the passage with an anecdote about her twenty-month old nephew, Roger, in which the two of them go for a relaxing late night walk on the beach. She compares Roger’s bubbly facial expressions and amazement at his first time experiencing the beautiful moonlit ocean to her many years of “sea-love”. Despite the difference in age and experience, she goes on to say that they appeared to sense the same awe and wonder in regards to the roaring and moonlit ocean. Carson also describes things in great detail to convey her love and appreciation for nature. “Bayberry and juniper and huckleberry begin at the very edge of the granite rim of shore, and where the land slopes upward from the bay in a wooded knoll the air becomes fragrant with spruce and balsam.”…
