I believe everyone has a story that shapes them. Mine begins the moment my life did. After I was born, the man everyone thought would be my father decided he had better things to do then to raise a child and bolted. He decided that alcohol was more important than a family. My mom, who was struggling to make ends meet, now had to figure what to do with a baby and a life of her own. We moved and lived above her friend's garage in a tiny efficiency. Every Life Matters I really only started understanding the meaning of abortion once one of my mom’s friends had one. Before that I had very little knowledge about abortion. My parents have always taught me to stand by what I believe and that others may have different beliefs. They always told me that I would meet people that would disagree with me and what I believe not only when it came to these kind of topics but many other things as well. Being told that, they told me to always respect people’s beliefs and their points of view because everyone has the right to stand by what they believe, just like I do.…

I start creating my work by replaceing traditional lighting associated with photgraphy with the lighting of tv screens. Then I continue following an image by also removing the figure as the main portion of the image , to make the figure less important. Finally, when i capture these images I use long exposures which creates a stillness of the image, except for the human figure, which creates this blurr and motion in the image. My images are a series of self portriats.…

In choosing this topic for my Take the Challenge project, I didn’t realize how much I would experience my topic. I’m Michaela La Vonne Dimick. I am 16 years old, and I have depression. If anyone has looked at a brightly colored image, and then looked at a black-and-white version of that image, then he or she would notice that he or she observes more detail in the black and white photo. Depression is like this.…

A Thousand Experiences Throughout life, individuals face different obstacles and struggles; my obstacle was my tendency to be shy. For example, when I was faced with social pressures like speaking in front of a class for a presentation, or meeting new people, I would be a nervous wreck. My palms would sweat, my voice would tremble, and it took all the strength I could muster to overcome my irrational fears. I only had a small, albeit close knit group of friends due to my introverted ways.…

Why We Tell Stories Stories have been with us since time began and remain to be a core tradition to not only tell them but create them. They possess a great deal of intimacy which are often captivating to the audience, entertain and educate them by use of well-served themes. In any society, there occurs a dynamic tradition of passing information and narrating life experiences in a creatively tied recital that accounts for the ordeals that took place in the past. When someone asks me what is the biggest obstacle I’ve overcome I always answer saying, learning English, but deeply in my heart I know that I haven’t overcome my true obstacle because my real obstacle is trying to make a future in this country. As a Hispanic migrant and undocumented, I face hardships every day. One of them is that even though I meet all the requirements, I am restricted to apply only to certain colleges and scholarships because of my citizenship status. This situation makes me feel as if only people considered “real” Americans can get the best opportunities, colleges, and aid while people like me get the leftovers and are even targets of hate. No one has put up a poster in front of a restroom saying “Americans Only,” but…

The Future The frequent question asked by students is: “What would my future be like?” Well, today's society has become more challenging as the years pass, and “education is becoming the number one passport to the future”, as Malcolm X once said. The speech that Barack Obama and Harry Kim made about education being important for the future and the countless lectures that Mr. Thoma drilled into my head had me feeling the elation of my entire life. I feel the perseverance to not let my community and my family fall in disappointment.…
