Personal Narrative: A Small Town In Deridder Louisiana

Improved Essays
What happens when you put a big city girl from Dallas in a small town like DeRidder Louisiana? Absolutely nothing. But what happens when the small town has a colorful scary secret? They say curiosity killed the cat but they never said it killed a person and from that logic I turned this tedious town into one of the most engrossing towns in Louisiana. Every year my family and I drive six long and enervating hours to our cousin’s house in DeRidder, in a small cube like car, with two large brothers and me in the middle. It felt like we were a family of anchovies getting ready to be shipped off. Our arrival there was a blessing and a nice time to stretch out my calves after it was physically abused by two hairy calves. Nothing is thrilling here in DeRidder it’s basically the Hank Hill of Louisiana, the only thing that could spark my interest is our next destination. The lake.
Miles and miles of fresh water right in front of me, slowly drifting my way telling me to come and explore. I swam to a little piece of land towards the left end of the lake, taking a

The scene was beautiful but the feeling was eerie almost like something was watching me. I hear rattling in the trees I look up to see a large emu beak almost about to poke my eyes out I step back to see the large bird with feathers that were the colors of a peacock’s train. I’ve never been more terrified oh wait nevermind, I never been more terrified when a whole flock of emus came out. It was almost like a standoff between us wondering who’s going to make the first move. I pulled out my waterproof phone and took a picture. As an idiot I forgot to turn the flash off and I stand there waiting for their move. Slowly the color red creeps into each inch of their feathers and their light hairs turned machete sharp and looked me in the eye with death on its

Growing up, my family and I weren’t very religious by any means. My parents grew up in Catholic families, but when they moved away from their families, they moved away from God too. Every time we were stationed in a new place, my parents always blamed not going to church on the military and how we would always be moving. My sister and I didn’t mind this, because we didn’t really know what church was, and didn’t understand the meaning of it, but when we moved to Louisiana in 2012, I met a friend that would change this. I met this girl Samantha, who seemed to be in a few of my classes.…

Her house sits in Atwood, Indiana, one of the smallest towns left in possibly all of the United States. The dirt road leading up to it stretches near a mile long, then curves into a gray gravel driveway that I used to cut my feet on when I would run around barefoot. My favorite sound was the car's tires munching on the gravel while it spun between the wheels, and grinded against the other pieces underneath tons of pressure. The driveway is the only dull color in sight because anything past it was bright green, the kind of green you see on elf costumes around Christmas time. The fields stretched farther than you could see, like an emerald ocean of smooth grass that served as the setting of all the grandkids' games.…

Growing up in Maine had so many advantages from the beautiful scenery to the unique qualities Mainers have. I can't say that I'm not blessed to have grown up in such a beautifully scenic place, but I can't say it's been easy. I'm originally from land-locked Indiana. I moved to Maine when I was younger with my parents and brother and as much as I love being from a different place it's been hard growing up without a close family in a state so closely tied together with their families. Growing up in Maine, especially Mid-Coast Maine, you know that all of the surrounding families have lived there for generations, everybody knows everybody, cousins go to school together, and siblings work together.…

Nearly all my life I have lived in Saint Charles, Illinois. To most people, the name Saint Charles is just a random city in a large world with no personal value, but for me, it is far more than just that. On the scale of the Earth, this 15 square miles town seems infinitesimally small, but this small piece of land holds nearly all of my most beloved memories, my dearest friends, and my loving family. My achievements through school, music, and sports all took place in this wonderful town that I'm so comfortable in. Going to college truly is the start of a vastly new chapter in my life.…

Being out on the lake was both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. It was like being at the top of a rollercoaster waiting for the first drop, the heart-squeezing plummet to certain death that was never quite fulfilled. I never said no to a day on the water. “Race you to the buoys?” My best friend is one of those girls you love one second and want to choke the next.…

The summer of 2012 will forever have a place in my mind; the summer I went from a coy, little girl to an independent, social girl. Everything started with my father, a confident and loving man, who has all the faith in me, it all started when he told me he was going to sign me up for space camp. Once, he notified me of this, I became a nervous wreck, I was a bashful child who loved her mom so much, she would not be able to leave her for an entire week; my mother was a devoted and indulgent person. Through a part of a camp, there was a tremendous part of fear in me. At the beginning of camp, I was extremely sad.…
