Personal Narrative: A Short Story

As soon as the referee called my name, I forced myself into an aggressive mindset and stepped into the fray. At first glance, I could not comprehend how my burly wrestling opponent was even in my weight class. A stocky junior with the body of a tree trunk stared straight into my inexperienced freshman soul. Immediately after the whistle blew, he dove for my leg. I sprawled back and blocked his arms, successfully barring this move. I knew I had to counter quickly and aggressively. He cautiously stood up and I lowered my stance, seizing his leg. As I started to pick him up, a sudden, short-lived feeling of excitement filled my mind as I realized that I had the potential to actually win this match. When we hit the ground, a sharp snapping sound filled the room, followed by what seemed like an eternity of eerie silence. Completely absorbed in my temporary victory, I was oblivious to what had just occurred. I extended my hand to help my opponent up, but he did not move. …show more content…
His elbow jutted inward and his left forearm protruded outward at an unsightly angle. A wave of shock hit me as I watched the color drain from his face. Did I do this to him? All the exhilaration I felt was immediately replaced by feelings of poignant remorse and self-deprecating disgust. The combative trance I had entered into quickly disappeared as my instinctive desire to help him took over. Despite having been on the receiving end of many injuries in the past, I was new to dealing them. As the paramedics lifted my opponent onto a stretcher, his mother cast me a grimace full of reproach that hit me in the gut like a sharp

He unleashed a flurry of japs and punches in his rage. To my surprise, every individual hit was strong and hurt upon impact. I defended as many of the punches as I possibly could, but even the ones I could block gradually hurt me. During that time, I couldn't land a single hit, for I was essentially focusing on defending myself and making any openings would have not been ideal. I could’ve continued to keep up with his punches, except while I was avoiding one of his attacks, I lost my footing, curled my head forward to protect it, and landed on the floor with my back first, which was what we were taught.…

The Gang of Misfits Red, all I see is red. Flashes of punches, crowds of people, and sounds of cheering meet my eyes, and anger fills my every being. I have become so sick and tired of this place, some may call it high school, but I call it prison with a view. The gang of misfits weren’t always the gang of misfits, we used to all be alone until today because today is the day I fought for my freedom. Let’s take this story back to the start of freshman year, not too long ago, but feels long enough.…

My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

“You used to be…”. It all happened one Saturday, while playing rugby on the dry grass and under South African sun and with leaves floating in the breeze. That day I’d decided that I would be a hero. In my fantasy, I would gloriously bring the bulky figure to the ground in a tackle worthy of a Springbok, and that in a Rocky IV moment, his body would hit the ground in slow motion with a hard thud. Word would spread of this David vs Goliath deed and that for years to come, I would be remembered by my peers for the tackle made that day.…

Through the decrepit, middle school, locker room mirrors, I could see her brawny figure standing behind me, her face replete with exasperation. The smell of her musk camouflaged by cheap perfume became more distinct as she walked towards me. As I turned away from the mirror to avoid sharing the narrow area with my antagonizer, I bumped into her. I apologized quickly, trepidation present in my voice. Evidently, that was not enough.…

During my Junior year of high school, I was diagnosed with Autoimmune Hepatitis with liver cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is the development of scar tissue left on the liver when the liver becomes scarred. During my hospital stay, a four night stay which included a biopsy, colonoscopy, and multiple ultrasounds, I was told by my doctors that I would never be able to play contact sports ever again due to the amount of scarring developed on my liver. If I were to get hit in just the right spot, my liver could lacerate and leave me internally bleeding, giving me a small window to get medical help. Being from a small town where sports mean everything to the community, they also mean everything to me.…
