“You, in the yellow shirt, yes, you, come over here and help me get this canoe in the water!”

“Ok,” I said. Me and the bus driver/canoe (who drove us to the river guy) both picked up the canoe and put it in the water. Then me and my dad jumped in the canoe and waited for the others. In the trove of memories that I have from the visits to Florida, one in particular stands out. One day when we visited in June we went to Blue Springs park. It had crystal clear water so you were able to see 40ft to the bottom. After swimming in spring water for a while we rented canoes and went down the river it was connected to. We had enough fun after a couple hours and we were about to finish the day off by jumping off a 5ft ledge into the 40ft deep water.…

As I swished the paddle through the lake and back up, I felt the warm sunshine against my face, and cold little sprinkles of water on my hand, it felt as if someone sprinkling a salt shaker on my hand. I looked up from the water to see the air filled with beautiful green trees staring back at me. I could just smell the aroma of bushy pines. I could hear the voices of other kids and parents talking. I looked back down at Glendale lake and saw a bundle of small gray fish swimming through the clear water, and happy birds chirping a soft melody.…

I knew that staying here, staying in poverty, predisposed me to a life of misery and malnourishment. The journey would be perilous, which made me wonder if it was worth it. I longed to voice my dissent and convince her to condone the actions of the corrupt government, however I knew the time to liberate had come. My patience for living life as nothing more than a pitiful pauper, salvaging and pilfering for my next meal was beyond exhausted.…
