Getting To Know: A Narrative Fiction

I walked outside the hut and by the height of the sun I could tell that it was about six in the morning. It was time to get my brothers up and ready for a busy day of work and school. They had stayed up most of the night waiting for Mama and Baba to come home.
“Ravi, Ruka, come on, wake up.” They didn’t budge. I said it a little bit louder this time, “Ruka, Ravi, it’s time to get up.” I thought that they were still asleep, but then I saw Ruka sneak a quick smirk before pretending to snore obnoxiously. The boys are beginning to catch on to what’s really going on. I can’t hide it from them any longer. I start to cry. We have no food, the land is flooded, and Mama and Baba are gone, dead maybe. Ravi and Ruka come over to where I’m sitting and lean on my shoulders and they start to weep as well. We spent the day mourning and praying that all wasn’t lost. If anyone could help us, it was God.
Day eight has arrived and I feel better today, happy even. The sun is back, the birds are singing, and a double rainbow is painted across the bright blue sky. It’s so beautiful outside. Ravi and Daruka are shooting rocks at each other’s feet. Today feels like it’s going to be wonderful. It was hard to miss the outline of two people walking, especially against the beautiful blue sky. As they got closer, I noticed that Ravi and Daruka were watching them too. People never come to this side of the village, unless… No, it couldn’t be…
Daruka and Ravi started sprinting toward the cameos of the two people with their arms open wide. It was Mama and

During this weekend, I can say that I experienced all three levels of communication. It is something that at first, I did not realize that I was being that particular way. A simple get-together for my friend’s seventeenth birthday turned into sleepless nights thinking about an ignorant comment. The sun went down and we all sat by the fire roasting marshmallows and sharing embarrassing stories. All was going well until my friends boyfriend, Joey, made a remark that left a mark in my brain forever. “Jay asked me like twenty times how much I workout” he snicked after Jay left the party. Kindness, in my opinion, is a virtue, a virtue not everybody has, the ability to be compassionate requires for the person to be in total control of his mood and desires, it facilitates relationships between humans, and when kindness it’s present everything becomes pleasant, smiles float around, warm feelings and faith in humanity are restored again, random acts of kindness are not so common, but I can assure that their rareness is what makes them so especial, in particular when the act is received from a total stranger the value of the act is multiplied in our minds. I would never forget the day in which a woman showed me that there is still light on cold winter nights, that not everyone is cold and unmoved, and that sometimes kindness doesn’t come to be a personal gain, but an unselfish act from one human to another.…

Jada entered her bedroom, flicking on the light and unwrapping the wet towel from around to her body. As she walked by the mirror on the left, her profile revealed the burgeoning form of a young woman, someone who looked much older than the 14 year old girl reflected. The purple bikini clinged to her flesh and goosebumps spread over her arms and stomach as the air conditioning blew down from the vent above on her cold hair. Tossing the towel across her vanity stool, she reached up with both hands and untied the elastic that bound her hair while her eyes caught the site of Brody across the street.…

Reconciliation Interrupted by the faint sounds of birds chirping and grass swaying in the gentle breeze, the calming silence became a distant memory. As the birds flapped their wings, moving at the edge of the tiny meadow, from one tree to the next, they cast their shadows over the body of a small brown skinned, black haired girl. She lay on her back in the hilltop grass, facing directly up towards the almost blinding light of the afternoon sun. Her dark skin, holding a lively warm glow, reflected the rays of sunlight off of her quickly flickering eyelids. Suddenly, they were open, revealing her dark brown almond shaped eyes and her ever so slightly off white sclera.…
