Personal Narrative: A Sense Of Anxiety

As I'm sitting here in Sheetz at 8:58 PM, an overwhelming sense of anxiety is clouding me right now. As Dr. Martin noted at the beginning of the school year, mid-terms are a painful time of the year. At the time I didn't think much of his thoughts, and that notion was unimportant to me. Mid-terms have been a painful time of the year to say the least. After reviewing the content of the class at the beginning of the year, I was honestly intrigued about the work I would be putting in. However the work load is outweighing my excitement at this time, which is definitely not completely my fault, but I also am to blame for my issues right now. In time I believe these problems will be fixed, and it's all a part of the "Advanced College Experience" ACE Program. …show more content…

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

“I’m ready, I’m ready” says my childhood star-Spongebob before starting each day of work. This was also the same attitude with which I started my junior year with. Unfortunately, unlike Spongebob I did not end up continuing with that same attitude. The year was 2016, and I was certainly filled with hope for the new school year, but all to no avail.…

Imagine being in 6th grade, and having someone come to talk to your entire sixth grade student body about middle school sports. During a question and answer session I asked if it was possible to run cross country and play basketball, and in a loud voice that went across the gym, a kid said “Why ask you’re too fat to play sports” and the whole gym burst into laughter. This is how my introduction to middle school officially began. As one could imagine the pain and humiliation that went along with my torture, but because I suffer from generalized anxiety disorder my problems were exemplified. I spent the next few weeks listening to everyone talk about me, repeat the story and laugh.…

Anxiety, a word that makes me cringe and over think my thoughts to the top of my head. Trouble breathing, trouble talking, trouble focusing, and trouble thinking. How is it possible that throughout my life, I had no idea what I had till my junior year, on October 2015. As I was on my way back to Washington, DC from New York, I had an immediate anxiety attack. Forgetting how to breathe correctly and fidgeting massively, I remember hearing cries of helps from others and seeing a paper bag being placed over my mouth.…

Everyone has at least one experience in their life that is a metaphorical journey. An experience I have had is dealing with anxiety. People tend to overestimate those with anxiety. They tell them to deal with it and coming from someone with anxiety I can personally tell you it is not that simple. Suffering from anxiety has, actually, made me a stronger individual.…

During the course of the semester, we’ve learned interesting things about psychology and how it can affect individuals behaviorally, emotionally and cognitively. We’ve covered a substantial amount of topics, however, I feel that a couple of topics, in particular, pertain to my life regarding my future: Chapter 12 on Stress, Health and Coping and Chapter 14 on Therapies. Chapter 12 is a recent topic that we’ve covered, which I feel relates to me at this point in my life. Ever since I started my first semester of college, I’ve been awfully stressed with multiple assignments getting thrown my way each week with the expectations of being completed the next day I have that class or the following week.…

If you were to ask me what the scariest part about having anxiety is, my answer to you would be how little is known about it. Mental health is such a feared thing to talk about, yet talking and spreading awareness is the only way to end the stigma. I have severe “performance anxiety” as my doctor called it, it 's no longer an everyday thing but for a long time it was, it started as being anxious before soccer games or track meets, I mean, nerves is something all athletes face, it 's part of the sport, but something about the way my stomach turned and the way my cereal repulsed me the morning of a big game, that made me realize it was a lot more than just a little pre-game stress. It took me a long time to realize; realize that something was wrong. It was hard to learn how to cope and how to try and get others to understand.…

The sickness that I live with is one that some would find excessively appalling, making it impossible to talk about; so I kept it to a whisper. This sickness I thought was to embarrassing to talk about, making it impossible to seek help, left me feeling alone in the dark. This sickness ruined friendships, without me realizing it. This sickness that made getting out of bed a struggle for me. This sickness made it impossible for me to see a positive future, until the day I stopped calling myself “crazy” and began to grow from what we all call, depression.…
