As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

I remember the day when I had the thought that would from that day on never fail to amaze me. I remember walking down Michigan Avenue in Chicago with the smell of Garrett Popcorn and sewage roaming the air. I remember seeing businessmen and business women making their way to work rolling their briefcases down the street. I remember the massive amount of tourists, including myself, stopping every five feet to take pictures of the beautiful sights of the city. I remember thinking to myself, “Why can’t these people learn how to walk in a polite and organized fashion?”…

If I were to be stranded on a deserted island my immediate attention would be to find/create shelter, find a safe and clean supply of food and water, and then to explore the island. However after I accomplish all these things I will need some way to stimulate my brain, because if I did not, I would certainly lose my own sanity, comparable to Chuck Noland from the film Castaway. I believe I work well as part of our team at Nicholson House, I am aware of and fulfil my own duties but where possible I try and support my colleagues. We carry walkie-talkies with us so we can contact each other around the building, if I have a cancelled visit or some free time I’ll ask if there is anything I can do for my colleagues if they are pushed for time and they need me to do a visit, or they need support with something. Where possible I try to pick up and cover extra shifts, I can also be flexible when it comes to my shifts, I am aware that sometimes people have little notice about not being able to do their shift so where possible I am always willing to swap. I have full confidence that where I believe I am a strong team player…
