Personal Narrative-Something To Play Hockey

Improved Essays
Hockey. I live hockey. I will always give anything to be on the ice. I do everything to live on the ice. I’m the type of kid who would abandon vacations and parties to go play hockey. On July 7th, 8th, and 9th, that’s exactly what I did. July 7th, 8th, and 9th consisted of my sister’s Summer Sizzler hockey tournament in Brick, New Jersey. Since the rink lay only twenty minutes away from a beach and boardwalk, my family decided we could go after their morning games with some teammates. Turned out those plans became squashed. I couldn’t stand the fact of not playing while my sister could. My parents and I talked about my urge to play, when it hit us. Why don’t I just play for another team! My dad looked up all of them teams and contacted each …show more content…
After I settled down a little bit, it came to my mind that I don’t know where NJ United played. “Wait. What even is NJ United?” I asked hesitantly. My dad looked me right in the eye. “NJ United is a AAA team out of Bridgewater Sports Arena.” “No, Dad, there is no way. NO! I don’t believe you. NO WAY!” I exclaimed with confusion and excitement. There was absolutely no way they wanted me to play for them in the tournament. AAA hockey makes big changes for anyone, especially for me who had just started skating ten months ago. I had already played on a boys team and a girls AA team so I had a good bit of experience. But never could I have imagined that I would be on a AAA team before I even completed one full year on the ice. “Wait a second, Dad. How does the coach even know if I can skate? Wouldn’t they want to evaluate me before letting me play?” I was now doubting I could really even play in the tournament. My dad looked at me and I could tell he knew exactly what he needed say. “Kathy Kehoe,” he said with no expression what so ever. “What,” I said extremely confused. “Who is Kathy Kehoe?” “Do you remember playing against the Rockets last season?” he …show more content…
Were they the team really far away?” “Exactly. Kathy Kehoe was their manager. When I heard that NJ United was the Rockets tier one team, I called her immediately. I asked her if they needed any players for the tournament and she said yes. After I told her you are my daughter, she said Marly Keeley is locked

The Tournoi International de Hockey is the biggest youth hockey tournament in North America and is held each year in Quebec City, Canada. Every year thousands of kids ages 10-12 come to this tournament, and I was fortunate to be one of the selected players from Georgia to play in this tournament. Through this two week tournament, I got the chance to stay with a family from Quebec and experience what they do on a daily basis. With this family, whom I am still in contact with today, I learned a new culture, got to tour the city and have some memories that I will never forget. To add to the experience, all the games were played the Pepsi Colisee, which is a NHL sized rink.…

The morning practice for the Tahoe Icemen, the team that Mickey Lang is currently in his first year of coaching, was long and grueling, but by Mickey’s enthusiasm that morning as we spoke, it appeared he’d be ready for round two as soon as the interview was over. I’m always curious about how someone initially gets involved in a sport they fall in love with. Was the passion passed down from a previous generation or was it their very own discovery? I start the conversation out with that question, “So when and how did you find the sport of hockey?” Mickey responds, “I was 3 years old and my father took me to a rink that was about 5 miles from my house and I immediately started skating and was probably about 4 years old when I started playing hockey.”…

As we drove closer and closer to Duluth the team we were playing that day was the talking point in the car. The Omaha Tropics were who we were facing first of four possible games in the tournament. They were the heavy favorite to win with the reason being because they used this tournament as a tryout team for their winter team. That meant they brought a hefty amount of very skilled players to this tournament all giving one-hundred percent effort skating for a spot on their winter team in Omaha. Not to mention, their team is mostly the same players every year, so in reality seventy-five percent of these kids played together all year long.…

Desired to play at this higher level of competitive hockey, I wasn’t going to quit. I researched online and found an article on “Cultivate Mental Toughness With the Navy SEAL's 40 Percent Rule". Being encouraged, I decided each week I would challenge myself to skate faster, shoot the puck harder, and play the game smarter. This change of pushing my limits physically and mentally improved my game.…

When I was 15, I was cut first round at High Performance Minnesota tryouts. High Performance is the tryout program that eventually selects the best players in the country to play on the USA U18 National Team. When there is no NHL to look forward too as a woman, I strived to play college hockey and represent the United States of America at the national level. This cut was devastating, it ended many of my friends’ hockey careers, but it only pushed me to improve. Every practice and every game I played was my fullest effort to out work every player in Minnesota.…

Fear not your best friend fear Eagerly waiting for the sound of the final bell ending the game, I limped back to the locker room ashamed of failing my teammates once again. With my jersey drooping below my knees, I dreaded every second of ice time starring at a swarming pool of merciless giants. Receiving the puck gave you the opportunity to score, but for me it meant running into a wall. Running into other players sent me flying through the air before gasping for air and landing dazed on the verge of unconsciousness. The condemnation of failing to contribute to my team or participating in the physical aspect of hockey reminded me I was in a dark world of self-loathing because I couldn't accept this fact.…

I’ve been playing the incredible sport of Ice Hockey for over 10 years now. Although it has become steadily easier, and more about sharpening skills than developing them, in the beginning it was extremely difficult. The progress I have made since when I first began playing is immeasurable. I have come as far as I have in hockey through all the years of support from my father, because he’s always been happy to watch me play competitively.…

After a long taxing day of school in the frigid month of January, I got into a car with my teammate and headed off to a varsity hockey game against Bridgewater Raynham. As soon as I open up the transparent glass doors, I can feel the brisk air brush upon my face. Instantly, the fond memory of my first rink experience poped up in my head when my cousin got an assist for his Norwood Mustangs varsity hockey team. I was young, only around six or seven years old. I remember him having a clear shot, but passing the puck to his linemate for the sure goal.…
