In my old country, though, I have experienced greater oppression and limited privilege, as I was a minority in Romania. While I lived in White society, skin factor never was a problem. However, Jewish people or Gypsies were viewed different, as they were considered different. I do not know much about the reason. Personally, I had no problem with them; only gypsies were known for lying and stealing.

I consider America to my second home. I feel comfortable and accepted. As a white individual, I have not encountered with the perceptions

With different views, cultures, and ethnicities comes many problems. As humans, we are all quick to judge and discriminate against those that are not like us. While it may seem as though it is recent or only happens pretty currently, this is not the case. When people began coming over to America, and even long before it was claimed as America, minorities have been neglected and abused both physically and mentally. Racism was alive and well back in the day as much as it is now.…

My dad doesn't understand me, and he doesn't let me speak what I think. He doesn't let me defend myself even if he knows it is a topic that he does not know about. And he doesn't let me prove my point if we argue, which is not fair in my case at all. When my father knows that I have proven him wrong and have made a fool out of him, he walks away with a threat and an awkward eye glare. I get nothing other than the tons of insults he throws at me and the heartache I get as I see the one I love fighting with me so much.…

I was born a woman; probably my father wasn’t so happy about my gender. Perhaps he wanted a boy named after him. I can’t remember my first thought as a baby, but I’m sure I wasn’t able to distinguish between males and females, or the fact that the doctor was a male and the nurse was a female. I just knew I wanted to love and be loved regardless of my race, sex, or religion. My friend Melissa was raped, and it was her fault.…

While it is uncomfortable to acknowledge that some of us have an unearned advantage in life thanks to things that we have no control over; such as gender, race, skin color, sexual orientation, accent and even wealth, it is important to discuss to better ourselves. As much as we, as individuals can continue to acknowledge and recognize our privilege it is practically impossible to discard or refrain from benefiting from the advantageous perks of the privileges. 0However, as we are able to see this invisible advantage many deny we can use our privilege to help and speak out and against the societal constructs. Lucky for me I have American, middle-class, straight and most of the time, white privilege. When I have a conversation with someone, with…

Today, I received the most disheartening news: I deserve no rights as a person. For years, white men have continued to oppress my fellow African-American slaves. Even my slave master, Dr. John Emerson, kept me under his hold until his death a few years ago. He dragged me away from Missouri to Illinois, Wisconsin, and full circle to Missouri. In my knowledge, Illinois and Wisconsin prohibit owning slaves, and yet I was still not free.…

How It Feels to Be a Minority Never have I ever felt that I have an ethnic identity, and I have never known what it is like to belong to a minority group up until I came to Hartford. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines minority as a group of people who are different from the larger group in some way such as ethnicity or religion (“minority”). Via two encounters in Hartford, I realized that I also belong to an ethnic group, which had never determined my idnentity before. In Hungary, the population is not really diverse.…

Meeting Ayaan during my stay at Columbia was a welcoming experience that inspired me to learn more about others and their world. Our first few conversations were about academic related subjects such as social problems and the significance of the legal system in the United States. While neuroscience was my concentration, Ayaan's passionate views towards civil rights called to me as her words reminded me of my origins.…

I never really thought too much about racism when growing up. Maybe that is due to my upbringing. I was raised in a small diverse country town where, for the most part, everyone got along.
