When i was 5 years old I was diagnosed with Tourettes's. The neurologist at Phoenix Children's Hospital told my mom that getting me involved in a sport would help reduce my ticks, as it would require more focus. Man, my mom jumped right into the task. Before I knew it she had me signed up for wrestling. I knew nothing about the sport, it was just the first one starting. I figured I would give it a try, what could it hurt. That was the beginning of a great love and learning about fear. I remember the first day at practice. I had no idea what I was doing. The coaches would show us different moves, then we would have to practice them on the other wrestlers. Once I was on the mat and trying to do the moves, it just began to flow. I was instantly …show more content…
I was up extra early. I ate a good breakfast. Then I showered and got ready. I was so excited, I couldnt wait to get there. I talked about wrestling the whole drive. My mom kept telling me to calm down and not waste all my energy. When we arrived at the school, I remember walking into the gym.I can still remember the smell. That is when the fear began to set in. Looking around there were so many wrestlers. Hundreds of kids in there wrestling gear. I instantly looked at my mom and asked if we could go home. She laughed at first and then took me aside. She made me tell her why I was scared. I told her I didnt want to disappoint her. She laughed again and told me that no matter what she was proud of me. All she asked was that I did my best. It was time to make her proud.
We were divided into groups by age and weight. I was paired with 5 other boys. They walked us all to the mat and explained that it was a round robin. Oh god, I thought. I have to wrestle 5 times. My stomach dropped again and I felt like I was going to be sick. I looked back at my mom and she was smiling at me and giving me a thumbs up. I closed my eyes and prayed they had forgot I was there. I had no such luck. The next thing I hear is them calling my name for me to

The first day I came in I looked around the room and tried to spot the more experienced wrestlers, from the beginner wrestlers. Once I noticed who needed a specific one on one partner or was not quite understanding a move, I would go wrestle with them and teach them slowly until they understood the movement. Only after a couple try's would the kids learn the move. I believe wrestling sometimes needs to be taught one on one because not everyone can jump right into the movement, yet they have to walk threw it slowly until they fully understand what to do and feel the muscle connection of the movement. For example the first week of practice I was teaching Robbie how to do a switch from bottom position, when while he was doing the sit out just fine, he wasn't putting his hand in the right place when he would hit the switch (which would be in between my legs) rather he would put his hand to the outside of my leg and wasn't hitting the switch properly.…

I was 10 years old. I looked from the edge of the mat, unaware about the endeavor I was about to take the moment my foot touched that mat. I finally decided to walk on, like they had taught me by bowing, it was the first of a near million times I was going to do this. I was a white belt, at the best taekwondo centers in the area. All the kids, stood to the side eerily silent, waiting for instructions.…

After a year of training BJJ at my HIgh School my coach knew that I would be out of training over the summer so he offered me a scholarship to train at an official school called Bronx Jiu Jitsu, where he sometimes teaches. My first day there training I entered with the mindset of me beating everyone up, and completely one siding them, but I will never forget , that day when class started.
