Personal Narrative: A Personal Experience In A Swim Team

Improved Essays
I acquired knowledge and skills when I earned a spot on the swim team at Sarah E Goode STEM Academy. I have been waiting since my freshman year for my school to have a swim team. Then they finally got one my senior year. Even though I am not the best at sports, including swimming, I had to be on this team. I tried out and I barely made the team. At first, I was scared to go to practice for a week because excuses I would make about how I did not belong there, and how it would not have made sense to go after missing a week. Finally, I gained the courage to go to practice. My first day back was rigorous, but I stuck it out for three more days. As long as I have been waiting for this, I had to quiet the team because I could not manage this extracurricular activity into my busy schedule any longer. However, within the four days that I attended practice, I learned much more in two hours than I have in eight hours of school. I learned how to …show more content…
After going to these few days of practice, I learned how to do a front jump (forward jump and dive), back jump (backwards dive), and approach (3 steps to the diving board). However, before even starting to dive, I had to face my fear of the fact that I was falling into a pool, whether it be forward or backwards. We tried one technique to get us use to going into the pool backwards; we were to lay head first on top of a folded up tumbling mat, then extend our arms out straight and hold them together at the fingertips as if we were diving in already. Next, we had to keep our legs straight and on the count of three one of our two coaches pushed us in backwards, while the other would watch how we performed the dive from the side. Joining this team, even if it was for less than a week, was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I may not have been part of the team for long, but I learned more about my favorite past time than I ever would anywhere

One of the most common mistakes people make is that they define talent and skill synonymously. However, they are two completely different things. Talent you have naturally, you don’t have to work at it. Skill is ability developed from hours and hours of practice at your craft. My best talent is by far my ability to succeed in school, and my natural affinity for STEM topics.…

Ever since I was in the seventh grade, I have wanted to lose weight pretty badly. When in eighth grade I did not take a lot of action to achieve this. I was encouraged by family and friends to join the swim team. At first I was hesitant because I had not played a sport in eight years. I did not believe I was athletically capable of keeping up with the Canton Swim and Dive team.…

Water polo is not easy for me, but that does not stop me from loving it. I started playing water polo in 9th grade, and from the moment I threw the ball I knew I had to play the sport. One of the toughest skills for me in water polo is ironically also one of the simplest: releasing for the ball. Releasing for the ball basically just means getting open for someone else to pass to you, but whenever there is someone guarding me, I panic. One day at practice my coach’s patience was waning thin.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

Growing up, I often was described as having “Sullivan speed”, which contrary to popular belief, was not a good thing. I’ve never been particularly fast, in fact I’ve always been relatively slow. But one thing I always had that made up for it was endurance. So, when my freshman year of high school began, I decided that I would try out for the cross-country team. While I still was never the fastest on the team, I truly enjoyed running competitively as well as in practice with my friends.…

I will always remember the teachers and coaches that had a positive impact on my life, whether it was in second grade or my senior year of high school. When I entered college, I contemplated majoring in Education and going straight into teaching because it was of serious interest to me. However, I chose to go another route with my major. After working for a few years in another field, I decided that it was time to strive for a profession that enthused me.…

The bed mercilessly taunts my exhausted limbs to return but my determined heart persuades me to brave the trial by water once more. As I dive over the ice cold pool, dread and regret fill every moment until my body finally makes contact. For two, sometimes three, hours the situation will only worsen as I repeatedly raise my arms above my head and pull back as hard as possible. Weeks of this pass by, all for the sake of being able to travel through 100 meters of water a few milliseconds faster. Swimming has been my primary sport since the age of eight.…

The 100 m warm up turned into 25 m as I struggled to make it across the pool without holding on to the wall and gasping for air. The first game went even better. Three days after the season began, we had our first tournament, in which despite adamant refusal to get into the pool, my coach put me in for the last 30 seconds of our last game. As I timidly played defense upon the girl in front of me, her muscles bulging, her cold stare piercing through my soul, I felt a tug as I was pulled under by my legs. I was pushed down and no matter what I did, there was no way I was coming back up till she let me go.…
