I have this unexplainable feeling I get that lives inside of me, something so powerful and sensational that I can feel it deep in my bones. If you asked me to explain this feeling I’d have to tell you it's as if something inside of me is telling me, this is how things should be, this is how I should feel. It’s unbelievably invigorating, so much that I don't think anyone could quite understand what this feeling truly is. When my elementary school years were coming to an end I realized I wanted to be something different, someone, who did something worthwhile, so I decided I wanted to be a violinist.

The first time I heard the sound of the violin, I decided to take my passion to the next level. I began listening to the famous music composer such as Vivaldi, Bach, and Beethoven. The pieces these composers created opened up my eyes completely. For the first time, I experienced the most beautiful, unimaginable image, as if the way the music played through my head made the flowers bloom. After

I was striving for an unattainable goal because I didn’t work towards any form of progression. On the other hand, being an instrumentalist has taught me the importance of daily goals, a good work ethic, and dedication. With that in mind, I am becoming more aware that music is not just the notes on an staff but also the zipping of a jacket and even the tumbling on a trampoline floor. I believe that my five year old self would be proud of who I am becoming because I have already completed my personal goals instead of lacking improvement in the shadows of someone…

When I entered the education landscape, I was foreign to the ideas and the nature of those that saw themselves as something more than just a student. I never thought that those students that sat behind the deteriorating desks could educate themselves. Ergo, as I transferred from middle school to high school, I began to discover those students that were seen as insignificant if I wanted to succeed within what was previously taught to me as the “real world”. Yet, it was through those encounters with those strange and unique individuals where I was exposed to something pure. I remember the first time I was ever exposed to music as an educational structure for me to discover myself in.…

The screeching of my violin echoed off the wall as I struggled to play Mendelssohn's concerto in E minor. The double stops that were meant to flow in harmony came out in a jumbled mass of notes indistinguishable from the shriek of a dying cow. I whimpered as these terrible sounds emitted out of my violin, and threw my violin down in defeat. I slowly tilted my head towards the clock, a terrifying reminder that my addition was only 10 min away. I gathered up my music, and ambled away from the empty practice room to where my judge would listen to my audition.…

When I was growing up and my brother attended high school, I always enjoyed going to Friday night football games and watching the best part of the game: the halftime show. While I sat in the stands, my brother would be marching sets, creating intricate formations and blasting his trumpet at fortissimo. I dreamed to be a part of the sets of formations and play difficult music at rapid tempos. Once I entered middle school, I immediately signed up for band and assigned to play the oboe, a woodwind instrument in the double reed family and, arguably, one of the most difficult instruments to master. I didn’t know then, but I later found out that this activity would push me out of my comfort zone and learn not only challenging sonatas and melodies, but also life skills I would need to achieve my goals.…

I sat in a crowded auditorium with nothing but my thoughts before I tried out for the Contra Costa County Honor Band. After about two hours I was led into the audition room drenched in sweat with my oboe in my trembling hand. I managed a pretty good audition, but after replaying the audition over and over in my head I doubted whether I would get in. A week later, my band director congratulated me on making principal oboe and handed me Maslanka's Symphony 7, with about 4 parts marked solo in bold letters.…

Black and white piano keys scattered the floor, dreams were crushed, and the future looked bleak. At that moment, I was presented with two options: to continue following my dreams or to live life in the moment and stop working to fulfill my ambitions. Both options had their pros and cons. If I quit and stopped trying to learn how to play the piano, and drums, my day would free up and I would be able to spend more time with my friends, and if I were to give up, nobody would blame me. I was never expected to teach myself three instruments and if I failed, I would just be another teenageer who had big dreams but didn’t reach them.…

Whether it was my young self having the desire to play the violin or simply me being obstinate in not listening to adults, it’s a wonder to realize that what defines me today is all due to my younger self refusing to give up. Despite my determination, it became clear to me that my passion for the violin was not matched by the effort that I was putting into the instrument.
