Personal Narrative: A Month I Feed Homeless People

Decent Essays
Something that most people don’t know about me is that about once a month I feed homeless people. Over four years ago, my grandfather and great uncle invited me to go with them to help distribute food to homeless people on the street. The first time I went with them I realized that ordinary people like us could directly help people who are hungry. Seeing how I could help take away someone’s hunger pain for even a few hours made it all worthwhile. Since then, I have bought and packaged food (usually a sandwich, chips, and a cookie) about once a month and get my parents or another relative to drive me downtown to pass out bags of food to homeless people in the street. I usually pack about 75-100 meals that we distribute in less than an hour.

Sometimes it’s difficult to know if and how my presentations and offers of information and handouts are being received by the clients I see at the food banks I visit. Last week at Federal Way Food Bank, I was fortunate to interact with a regular client who gave me a little insight. K welcomed me warmly, and told me she hadn’t been able to come to the food bank but once a month since her car broke down in November. She continued to share how she was able to be very frugal and prepare tasty dishes for herself and her son with food she had stored and items shopped for at her infrequent trips to the supermarket. She went on to praise me and the great recipes she received during my demonstrations.…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

It was Thanksgiving morning, my brother, my sisters, and I were on our way to meet our parents and family at the AT&T stadium to tailgate at the Cowboys football game. On our way there, we stop at a red light, and I notice a homeless man sitting there. He had nowhere to go and nothing to eat. I felt bad for him and asked Jennifer, my sister, if we should give him some food. She says yes, so we stop at the gas station right in front of us.…

I’ve never been able to decline help to someone in need. I always put everyone else's needs before my own because when I sacrifice myself in order to put a smile on someone else’s face it gives me peace. Contributing to a cause to make the world a better place is worth the sleepless nights. When one is passionate about helping people it won’t matter to them how long they have to go without food or how tired they will feel at the end of the day. Just this week, I’ve had several occasions where I gladly gave up my time to do people favors or help someone in need.…

Just then, the smell of hot chili drifted in from the nearby kitchen. And so the “We Care We Share” initiative was born. I took charge of our new project, which was to serve hot food to the homeless once every month, and helped make it a reality. It was only after the initiative was running that I was commended on my leadership and I realized my aptitude for it.…

Choice of Topic I chose to write about food scarcity because growing up in Mississippi, I noticed how some of my classmate would eat lunch as if it was the only meal they would eat all day. At that time in my life however, I was too young and lacked the knowledge of how to conduct research. I would notice the homeless people who you not ask my mother for money but for a meal and the look in their eyes. During my Summer break visits to Virginia, my grandfather and his father grew a garden together in which they donated the vegetables and other food items to the foodbank.…

I have never really been a very outgoing person but, I do love doing something nice for people. For this pro-social experiment, I thought that I would try to do something for the many homeless people that I see on a daily basis. I decided that I would go around to some of the people that I see around the Wal-mart area and around and bring them food just something small, a gesture of kindness. For me this was going to be awkward I do not like talking to people let alone people that I do not know.…

I have often heard the saying, “when I was hungry you gave me food, thirsty and you gave me water,” and thought to myself that I could battle hunger in my own way. I decided to service the homeless in my local neighborhood of Jamaica Queens. My goal was to make another needy person’s life better even If it was for one night. I knew for sure that I did not want to provide monetary donations that could be used to purchase drugs by the individuals I want to help. After thinking about different possibilities to help the homeless,…

Professor Janine Ledoux, my instructor for a class on Health and Nutrition, invited me to join her in serving food at the Blessing Center - a non-profit charitable aid organization located in Redlands, CA. My experience at the Blessing Center, serving food to the homeless members of my community introduced me to a world I was naively unaware of and shed light on the positive difference compassionate people can make. My time at the Blessing Center allowed me to delve deeper into how issues such as homelessness, joblessness, and hunger affected my community. One man was particularly eager to share with me how his family has struggled with homelessness and hunger ever since he was laid off from his construction job during the 2008 recession.…

Thousands of individuals around the world battle with the unrelenting realities of poverty, homelessness, and starvation every day. They experience this even on a holiday like Thanksgiving, where the principal thought of this day is to give thanks to the blessings of the harvest and loved ones. In our local community in the District of Columbia, the capital of the nation saw 11,623 people without permanent shelter last year on Thanksgiving weekend. This Thanksgiving, I was blessed with the ability and cognizance to…

When I was in fifth grade, my family and I took a trip to South India. While we were there, we visited some of my maternal aunts and uncles in a village in Sarjapur. Their living conditions were very poor, their houses cramped with just bare necessities, and they spent most of the day working on a farm to raise money for their family. After this experience, I felt blessed to have a nice house to live in and an ample amount of food and clothing, and I decided I wanted to share that blessing with others. When we returned, I started looking for community service opportunities.…

“Approximately 792.5 million people in the world do not get the food they need to live a healthy life. That is nearly one out of every nine people on earth (Stop Hunger Now).” This is such a devastating thought that many people become overwhelmed and don’t know how to help the hungry people in this world. Hunger may not be stopped all at once, but it can be stopped in a small portion. Once a program is started in a community, it can expand to more communities helping thousands of people.…
