Personal Narrative: A Loss Of Candy

Improved Essays
A Loss of Candy Last Halloween night, in my neighborhood, I was trick-or-treating. As it was a little after six o'clock, the sun was just setting; it cast a beautiful shade of purple across the sky. All kinds of skeletons, goblins, and other monsters had started to roam about. I had had a specific plan for how I wanted to trick-or-treat. Everything was going smoothly; I was stocking up on candy. I was about to go into the outskirts of my neighborhood and I had almost filled my bag already. That is when it happened. I had not known about them, but there they were. Like four submarines hiding under the radar of a big battleship, my friends were trick-or-treating in my neighborhood. I watched as they got 3 more houses before finally noticing …show more content…
We had to make a full u-turn, passing the houses we had already gotten. By the time we got to the houses, it was twenty minutes to eight o’clock, the official end of Halloween. I did not receive any full size candy bars from any of the houses, in fact, they were all dreadful candies like tootsie rolls or lollipops. After getting all of the big houses, we needed to split up and it was five minutes to eight. So, I got the last few houses I could, and went straight back home. After counting my candy, I realized that I could have at least tripled the amount of candy I had gotten. After realizing this, I was irritated that I was not able to get the maximum amount of candy. If I followed the route, we would have gotten all of the neighborhood and would have an overflowing bag of candy. I felt like I had really missed out on a lot of candy and not risen up to my full potential. To think flexibly was very helpful when I went trick-or-treating in that I had a set plan on where to go during Halloween. It was put into play when I saw my friends and did not want to leave them. Even though I had wanted more candy, I still went with my friends. It taught me to be more open to different situations, and I learned to be

To many, the end of October is a time of corn mazes, costume parties, and haunted houses. Many cultures celebrate harvest festivals during October, though none are as well-known as Halloween. Because Halloween is primarily descended from the Celtic festival of Samhain, when some think of Halloween, they think of bats and cats and witches. However, although Halloween as it is currently know is a wholly American creation with regional rituals handed down by generations, it did not become a “full-blown American holiday” until the turn of the century (Bannatyne). Because of the contemporary nature of Halloween, without Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Sylvia Plath’s “Lady Lazarus”, and George A. Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead, the holiday as we…

That was until I found a recipe on how to make some chocolate chip cookies and said, “I can totally do this!” an hour and a half later, (yes ... I struggled) and with some guidance of my mother, a batch of cookies popped out of the oven. I was scared at first to let anybody try them because they looked quite horrid, but as soon as the first daredevil, my older brother, tried this twelve-year-old’s cookies he immediately smiled, shoved the remaining cookie into his mouth, and grabbed another two.…

And then that repeats itself, so it almost seems like there must be some rules that govern that behavior. As my adventure drew to a close, I thought, how appropriate that it should end on Halloween? After all, this is the day when people like to suspend their beliefs in the physical laws that govern our world. Spirits awaken from the dead.…

Halloween, an American tradition where young children can go ‘trick or treating’ around their neighbourhood, however, this has risen the debate of whether this celebration is a safe or a suitable one to be part of. An opinion piece was published on Mamamia on the 29th of October, 2015, titled ‘Why my kids won’t be doing Halloween’, written by Alissa Warren, implies that Halloween is a ridiculous and an inappropriate event to be participated by anyone. In a disconcerting and exasperated tone, Warren targets readers of Mamamia and parents, of this whole issue of the pointless festivity. The article was also accompanied by a visual image that displays some kids in costume, trick or treating, with no one around and followed by a comment, written…

I find joy in the laughs I hear when the club members are playing a game of basketball. I find joy in seeing the club prosper and grow larger overtime. I find joy in the knowledge that none of those things would be possible without the yearly funds the Haunted House event raises.…

As Halloween approaches, we are all indulging in our love of all things spooky. Ghosts, spirits, monsters, and—this year particularly—clowns have all been filling our minds lately. For our third dispatch, I was looking for something different to the Art Institute or the Shedd Aquarium. The idea of looking at haunted hotels first appealed to me because of the location of them. The Congress is what I stare at while I sleep.…
