That was the only thing on our minds at practice. We played our hardest every game. Finally, we made it back to the state championship final game. The game was played at Michigan State on their softball field. Driving through the campus you could hear the announcer stating the players that were up to bat. Also, you could almost taste the cotton candy and roast almonds as you walked into the stadium because the smell was very strong. The game was about to start and it was time for Coach Bohn to give his long pump up speech. The game started and it was down to the final two innings and both teams remained scoreless which meant, any error could lose the game. It was the first time we had runners in scoring position, and it was my turn up to bat. My first pitch was a ball, then the second one was a ball. Coach Bohn called a timeout and said to me and the base runner, Kayla Gremel, “Marisa, you are going to fake bunt and Kayla you are going to steal third base”. We both shook our heads, and said “okay”. I fake bunted and the ball flew past the catcher and Kayla advanced to third base, which resulted in Coach Bohn called another timeout. This time, I knew what was coming, I was going to have to do a “rip city”. A “rip city” is our code name for a suicide squeeze play. It means no matter if the pitch is on the ground or three feet above your head you have to get the bunt down because the person on third is stealing home.
