"Are you ready to go?" yelled Clayton across the house. The last month of summer meant the first days of riding. Clayton and I ride dirt bikes and four wheelers every summer. This summer marked our third year of riding all the trails behind my house. We rode during the winter, during the summer, and sometimes in the rain. Clayton, my neighbor is a couple of years younger than me, but he some of the same interests one of those was riding. I felt a little bit nervous that day before we went off riding, like I knew something was going to happen. When we arrived back at the house I shut off my dirt bike and stepped off. As soon as I stepped off my shoelace got stuck and pulled the foot peg right into the back of my right knee. I didn't …show more content…
The pain made my leg feel like I had just gotten shot right in the back of my knee. The ride to the hospital didn't take long, but felt like we had traveled to a completely other state when we arrived. I was quickly rushed into the emergency room on a wheelchair because they didn't want me to put any pressure on my leg. The doctor told me when he looked at my knee, "I'm not sure if the stitches will hold the skin together but we'll try to get it sewed up." This wasn't my first time I had to have stitches many times before this incident, but by far this was the worst cut I have had. After about thirty minutes he had eighteen stitches in the back of my leg. The doctor told me, "Go home and do not put any pressure on your knee or the stitches will come out." After he told me everything I could and couldn't do I had to wait for all the paperwork to be done before I left it took them about ten minutes then I …show more content…
Every night I had to change the bandages and put something on it to keep a infection out of it. I could walk anywhere besides the bathroom for three days to let the wound heal up a little. I was going by everything the doctor told me and after about a month it started to heal tremendously, but during that month all I could do was lay on the couch or bed and watch tv. When I finally began to walk I ended up almost tearing some of the stitches from walking so much. I then realized that I would have to miss the first week of sixth grade because I couldn't walk too much or else I would damage my knee even more. My teachers were nice enough to not make me do any makeup work from the week I was out. I ended up not being able to go to play at the gym or the playground for around two months just to make sure it healed right before it messed with any of the muscles. The first couple of days I got to go play were kinda boring because I still couldn't do much so I had to sit back and watch everyone else have fun. Later on during the school year everything went back to normal after the doctor told me I was healed up and could go play and do everything else. I did end up missing half of my football season but my first game back I started so it was

The effects of it quickly hit me and I start to get fuzzy here. The doctor came in and marked up my knee with all kinds of purple marks, and I could not tell what they were because my contacts had to be out. On my way to the operating room I was pumped with anesthetic medication and slowly lost consciousness. I woke up in a post-op room drowsier than anything I’d ever experienced before. I was badgered with the same question over and over.…

My grief was overbearing, and maybe to others, dramatic, but only an athlete would understand. Through my sorrow, I was anything but joyous. Though I am the type of person that strongly believes everything happens for a reason, I still at times wish that what happened, happened in an alternative way. I believe the one thing that I would change would be three years ago, on Easter Break. I would have to say, it was by far one of the most life changing events that has happened to me, yet.
