Narrative Essay On Black Hair

Short black hair. Five foot four. Porcelain skin and eyes as black the abyss. You put all that together, along with some sugar, spice, and everything not nice, and you get Megan, my ex. People usually write about a single life changing experience in their younger years that turned everything around for them. In my case, I was an empty shell growing up. I had my own trials and tribulations but for the most part, nothing really got to me. The lessons that those experiences could and should have taught me passed me by. I was still waiting for that moment that would rock my world. In my case, that moment spanned eight months. Eight short months of ups and downs, lefts and rights. I became someone else, someone new, all because of a single person. …show more content…
I put on my glasses. I make a habit of closely studying everyone I meet, and that was just what I did. She carefully removed her jean jacket. Odd, she also enjoys wearing jackets in the blistering Philippine heat. She kept her earphones on. I was then aware that my similar brand of headphones were strapped around my neck. Guess she’s not too keen on making conversation. Her long black hair hang on each side of her face. I smiled. I always liked long black hair. She notices me staring and smiles. Panic! I exchange a quick smile before I quickly avert my gaze to something else. I continue to stare off into god knows where before I decide that it’s safe to study her again. I did this for the next thirty minutes before my brain and heart decided that I had fallen completely, woefully, and dangerously in love with the girl sitting across me.
Fast forward to the break-up. Fast forward to the cataclysmic, extinction level meteor that bursts straight through my happy blue skies and turns my world asunder. I knew break-ups happened and I knew that not everything lasted forever and had a happy ending. She promised me the world and I took her word for it. I took what she said to heart and was completely enthralled by her, only to be whisked away from dreamland by her own

“Black Hair” by Gary Soto has a specific line that reminds me of what an average day in high school for me was like, “The days were dull. I did what there was to do from morning until the bell sounded”. I usually felt this way because, like Soto in his autobiographical story he felt alienated from everyone around him. I am about to tell you my story of a time in my life where I felt shunned by everyone.…

As a biracial child in America, I never quite fit in. Growing up in Mendocino,California with exactly one “black” girl (myself) in the entire school, I was the go to for questions about rap music, dance moves and slang. I felt as if I was a representative for the entire African American race even though I am just as white as I am black. Once I left the sheltered bubble of Mendocino, I saw more people that didn’t look like me which left me in an identity crisis, everyone had a community except for me. My African family praised my fairness, and adored my curly tresses, but my white family didn't understand what to do with it.…

The perception of normal in America has become a hindrance for African American women to express their unique beauty in today’s society. The ideal image that has been pushed through media is the Eurocentric beauty, causing Native American, Hispanics and African Americans to conform to look more American. African Americans have been working hard to mold themselves to what they feel is most acceptable in society for years now. Since post emancipation, the African American culture has two methods to “fix” their blackness in order to blend in (Hargro). One being to straighten their hair to make it more pleasing to the eye as the European hair textures which is the ultimate goal of “good hair”.…

Mark my words, it’s cool, I think it’s great when girls shave their heads. A shaved head is not for me. If you are anything like me and you love your hair long and hate the growing out process, do not shave your head. Especially not just one part of it because you will always be covering it and can’t keep it down or in place. Rainbow hair was interesting.…

I grew up in a pretty isolated area, away from bright city lights, and also away from kids my age to socialize with. But, I wasn't completely alone. I had a doll that was practically the same size of me at age four, she had long golden hair, blue eyes with curly eyelashes to complement them, and wore a pastel pink dress. We would often dance in the kitchen close to bedtime, listening to the radio, while my mom would sometimes watch for entertainment while she was fixing dinner. The doll would always wear the pastel pink dress, while I would wear one of my multiple pairs of pajamas that were in different colors and have my hair up in a low ponytail.…

Humans are surrounded by poverty everywhere they go, but never realized the long lasting effects of it in our society and individuals. In the essay "Black Hair" by Gary Soto, he explains the life of a young seventeen year old Mexican who struggles on the streets to make a decent living . Soto is able to portray the emotions and experiences of his life by writing the essay in first person. The audience has the opportunity to relate towards what life is when not having a place to sleep at night, being tired from work and dirty because there is no home to go to and shower. Likewise, in the story "Sonny 's Blues" by James Baldwin, a black teacher living in the "ghetto" city of Harlem, explains in first person the struggles of his brother Sonny…
