A Lesson Learned
Throughout my life, I have learned that perseverance and hard work is the key to success. From the many battles I’ve faced, being diagnosed with thyroid cancer was one of the worst. Every obstacle I’ve conquered has shaped me into who I am today.
This was my senior year of high school; I had my mind set on how amazing it was going to be. Aside from all of the stress from college applications and senior exemptions, the year was going great, until an unexpected phone call was received. I answered the phone to hear the voice of a Wake Med Hospital nurse stating that my blood test results were revealed and I needed to come to the hospital to see the doctor as soon as possible. By natural reflex, my mom and I rushed to the hospital,

My key life lessons are that nothing beats hard work and if you treat others with respect, they will generally treat you with respect. Hard work and effort are the main aspects that lead to “lucky” things happening. Good things don’t just fall into people’s laps, the ones that have the most “luck” generally are those that put in the most effort and work. Also, I have learned that when you truly respect those around, they will respect you back and life is much easier when you aren’t doing things behind each other’s backs.…

My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

Junior year of high school was one of the most challenging years of my life. My father was diagnosed with stage four cancer in both his stomach and his lungs. Therefore, he was unable to work. My mother worked multiple jobs along with having the full time task of taking care of my father and the rest of our family. My parents transferred me back to the online charter school I had attended in ninth grade so I could complete my studies at home, relieving my mother of the struggle of driving me to school everyday.…

At the beginning of the year I was really nervous about taking your Composition 1 class. You see, writing papers was never one of my strong traits. Looking back on this semester, I can see just how much my writing has improved. I went from being a writer who stressed over every tiny detail of a paper into someone who feels more confident in her writing to actually start enjoying what I put in my papers. Even though I stressed over every detail in my writing I still lacked a lot of the knowledge I needed to not make as many errors.…

This week, I dove right in and started picking up a couple of things in Mrs. Herrold's classroom. To begin, I took over the morning routine of the "Daily Fix-It" worksheets, calendar, and morning meeting. Through morning meeting, I was able to get to know the students a little bit better. I asked them questions like: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" "What is your favorite animal?"…

I learned about how common it is to get thyroid cancer, and with all the other cancers out there I’m surprised not everyone is dead because of cancer! I can now begin to understand how terrible the process of cancer is, and how awful it must be to have to experience something as traumatizing as this. As I learn more and more about thyroid cancer, I realize how appalling it is that something can literally kill you from the inside out and practically eat you alive. I hope that someday soon we will find cures to all the different kinds of cancers, and that no one will have to worry about cancer anymore, it will be a thing of the past. Nikolai Lenin once said, “The most important thing in illness is never to lose…

From sitting in class the first day to week 10, I have learned so much. My strongest gain from learning in this class is looking inbetween the lines and seeing if the sentance is a opinion, fact, or generalization. this step helps me determine what this articles is going to be, fact or opinion. I also have gotten faster at pointing out the main idea. One of my weakest abilities still is to connect with some topics, if they are too bland or boring its very hard for me to understand what the author is trying to say, by realizing this I can focus more on stories that are harder to connect with and get better at understanding them.…

I learned a lot in one day, but I wish I could have learned it in a different way. Mom took my siblings and I to Dad’s apartment. Dad was tired, as usual, from working a twenty-four hour shift. So as he slept, my brother and sister, being the older ones, got to pick out movies for us to watch. Then, suddenly, my stomach started to twist and turn.…

Freshman year was almost the death of me; physically and mentally. That year was not all fun and games, and from this I had severe depression from the constant stress. The AP and Honors homework had taken a toll on me. Late sleepless nights, and with my parents on my back I was too stressed for a fourteen year old. Enough was enough I went to my parents and confronted them on the issue.…
