The star is fussing with her dress as the boys attempt to maneuver a bench through the wings. The lights are out. The only way of sight comes from the soft glow of the stage. A prop is missing. Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. About ten years before I was born, my grandma, Katie Binder, lost her life to breast cancer. My father and his family have told me about my grandma’s love for making beautiful, lively artwork. Over the years, I have inherited several of her paintings, a collection of her vintage cameras, and one of her homemade cloth dolls. My most valuable possession was my house. It wasn’t anything fancy or exquisite, but it was there that I had spent the precious moments, however few, with my beloved dad. I remember that we would spend hours playing, running around the arched, brightly lit corridors. On either side, I recall the large mahogany doors which would fluidly open to reveal ancient, chestnut-brown rooms with antique, twin bed frames which were confined within. I will never forget the uncanny gargoyles that were suspended onto the wall behind, the very same monsters who would assault my sleep and curse me with countless numbers of sleepless nights.…
