I am known for the "American System" and known as the "Great Compromiser," however I have accomplished and been through so much more than that. Born in 1777 in Hanover County, Virginia, I was exposed to American history since I was young. In 1797, I moved to Kentucky along with many others wanting to pursue careers in law and politics. My political career began in 1803 when I was elected to the Kentucky General Assembly then appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1806. I was Secretary of State under John Quincy Adams.…
Progression The quote “Without a struggle, there can be no progress”(Douglass) means a few different things to me. One, this quote means that if you are struggling with something, then you are getting better at it. Two, this quote means that struggling is a good thing. Lastly, this quote tells us that if you are not struggling then you are not getting any better.…
When I started to write I would write about the evaluation of a novel in a very formal format and I would write about the character and how they connect with a certain idea or theme. Although it was opinion and my perception of the question it did not differ from the one the other students had I still felt disconnected, I was meant to take a predestined path about the ideas that I wrote about. When came to college and I was given my first written assignment I wrote as an impartial third party that is following an idea that is different yet the same. I wrote it then when it was evaluated by a peer and I was told that nothing that I wrote about connected to me or felt personal in any case, and was asked what message I drew from these short story…
This summer I attended Appalachia Service Project, and it taught me many life lessons. Appalachia Service Project is a mission trip that serves the Appalachia region. This trip taught me that you need to be grateful for what you have, that there are so many people that care about me and that one small action can change a person’s whole life. The trip taught me more than I ever imagined it would have. While on Appalachia Service Project, we would service the people in need.…

In the first year of our relationship, my boyfriend, Jason, and I started having a few disagreements about decision making and communication. We would often watch movies together, eat dinner, or do something that I had planned. I was making all the decisions. Even if Jason had planned something for us to I would veto it for my own ideas. This lead to a little bit of animosity surrounding how we spent time together.…
If the Price is Right... Ever since senior year started, I have always enjoyed getting the mail. Getting the mail was not a chore, but a simple way to turn my day around. Suddenly, one typical day in October, something new appeared on top of the repetitive bundle of bills and newspapers in my mailbox: a giant, bold envelope with the words “You’re In!” printed on the front side.…
To Whom Much is Given, Much is Required Twenty two years old, devastated and newly divorced; all things I had considered the foundation of family, now gone. I found myself a single father, custody of my beautiful princess bequeathed to me by the California Supreme Family Court system after numerous attempts to stand humbly in front of a judge, I just wanted to be with my child. I had barely the resources to sustain myself, let alone the needs of a small child. Hell, I was still a child myself.…
While there are no major hardships or challenges I have faced personally, there is something a hardship that affected my entire family. When I was in the ninth grade, I found out that my twelve-year-old sister had been self-harming herself. Finding out my little sister was hurting herself was the most devastating news I had ever received. She started cutting around the time I started public school, so evidently I blamed myself. I couldn’t accept the fact that my sister turned to a blade before she turned to me.…
Personal Insight Questions My dad crossed the border when I was only six months. He never finished middle school and my mom went only up to freshman year of high school. They had to drop out because they had to help and support their family.…

What It Takes to Work Hard Work is means something different for everyone. How is it possible to work hard if we do not even know what work is? From a young age, we learn that struggling is a bad thing, that it’s something that you got to get rid of. But what if it really isn’t something to worry about? Everyone goes through difficult times, but it is how we deal with them that matters. Personally, I feel that all the challenging moments I have lived through has mold me into the determined and inspired person I am today. The most painful and tough, but transformative, time in my life deals with my stepfather. He got a heart attack and now he is unable to walk, eat and, speak. His condition has severely affected my mother and I. When my mother came to the United States when she was offered a job here and soon after, she met my stepfather.…
