Personal Narrative: A Dystopian Society

Imagine a society full of just Karim Barsom. Basically, everything is the same as it is now except everything happens at the last minute. Everyone would lay around watching TV, playing games, or pacing for absolutely no reason at all while they still have hours of work they must complete. For some, this would be a dystopian society. For me, this is a utopia as long as it is done right. This society would probably be the perfect fit for me but it is based on a different idea that I can not claim credit for.
Brandy Detwiler is an English teacher at Central York High School. In her time here at central, she has come across just about every type of student there is. There’s the overachievers, the lazy ones, the quiet ones, the loud ones, the optimists,

This society came to be because of a scientific study on stress. In this study, it is found that short bursts of high stress are better for you than a prolonged period of low to moderate stress. The government decided that the best way to do this is by making everyone push everything off until the last minute. In all the extra time, leisure activities are the only thing that people are allowed to do. If you want to do work instead, that is your own choice as long as you know that you won’t live as long as everybody else. There are always the people who can’t stand around and do nothing their entire lives. They are the backbone of this society. They get all the real work done while everyone else has jobs that can be put off until the last minute. There is no reason for anyone but those people to go to work for more than a couple hours every week becuase it’s not like they were going to do anything during the rest of the time anyways. All the trash would be collected on the same day in a mass panic by the garbage men. Rather than stopping people in traffic for speeding or other violations, police just take a picture of the license plate and driver and then send them a fine or court order whenever they have time. The point is, in this society, most things would still get done. It all just happens a little later. If you don’t do your work, nobody can tell you off because then they will look like hypocrites whenever they want to take a break simply because they feel like it. People cover up for each other just to keep society

Not only do the workers toil for many hours, but also they receive little to no vacation days. Colleen, a worker at The Maids, states that “what [she] would like is to be able to take a day off now and then… if I had to… and still be able to buy groceries the next day” (120). Therefore, these workers must sacrifice their physical health in order to sustain themselves. This leads to tolls on mental health, too. Eventually, says Ehrenreich, one loses his/her will to continue working with little reward; “[i]f you hump away at menial jobs 360-plus days a year, does some kind of repetitive injury of spirit set in” (106)?…

“If I were Shannon Miller this would not happen,” I often thought as I positioned my body onto the bar. I hated heights and even being a few feet in the air on the highest uneven bar unsettled me. It seemed as if I were on the peak of a mountain top and my oxygen supply was thinning out. Each exhale made me dizzier and before you know it, I would be climbing down in a hurry, anxious to see my score even though I knew it would be low. I hated the fear I felt about practicing on the bars and how I believed that I would end up like my older teammate Chanel, who recently had surgery on both of her knees due to an awful fall in the last competition.…

In the modern world, there is a tendency to fetishize hard work. Manual labour is viewed by those who may not necessarily practice it as a noble enterprise, giving its own unique satisfaction. Though this is true in many cases, the unfortunate reality is that working hard all day, every day exacts a brutal toll on body and mind. Not only does work often take away energy that might otherwise be spent on constructive personal pursuits, it historically paid only the bare minimum needed to keep workers coming back to the factory, mine, or mill, regardless of their ability to survive, let alone thrive on such meagre compensation. Constant danger, active and passive oppression by local and national power structures all contribute to the deprivation…
