Personal Narrative: A Different Role

A Different Role I had always admired the cellos in the music rooms of Trudeau. In Grade 9, I started playing the double bass when I joined the strings program, and while I enjoyed bass, I had always wanted to play the cello. Making the switch was extremely difficult, but I worked hard for it, and now, over a year later, I am able to play decently. One of the first memories I had with cello started in February of 2015. I had just finished an entire semester of playing bass, and I was looking for something new, something harder. I remember speaking to my music teacher, Mr. Rawlins, about the switch. When he approved it for the 2016-17 year, he told me that he thought I was musically smart. I had never thought that I would be musically smart, …show more content…
I started on cello when I came back from summer vacation. Everyday since then, I’ve worked hard and practiced every single day. In December, I sat in the third chair (first chair being the best, and so on), while Tristan remained in the very last chair, 9th. Both Tristan and I have seen so much improvement, but it came time for the roles to reverse. In January, Tristan asked me for a favour and I readily agreed to it. He had asked me to teach him cello. It was a moment I will never forget, because I had surpassed my teacher and become the teacher. I was reminded of how grateful I was when Tristan taught me, and there was no way I could say no. The improvement I had made in 4 months surpassed the improvement he had made in 14. Mr. Rawlins had seen potential in me to surpass our first chair, and now, after 8 months of playing cello, I have surpassed another unnamed player who has played for 3 years and 8 months. It is not because I am good at what I do, in that case I would be shamelessly bragging about myself. Instead, I think I have improved so much because I love my instrument. It is because I care about the sound I produce and the way I play. I care about how I practice and how others around me practice. I want my section to be the best, and I do my part even if others don’t do

I was striving for an unattainable goal because I didn’t work towards any form of progression. On the other hand, being an instrumentalist has taught me the importance of daily goals, a good work ethic, and dedication. With that in mind, I am becoming more aware that music is not just the notes on an staff but also the zipping of a jacket and even the tumbling on a trampoline floor. I believe that my five year old self would be proud of who I am becoming because I have already completed my personal goals instead of lacking improvement in the shadows of someone…

I was in awe how cool the music sounded and wanted to do the same thing. Get the same instrument no matter what; that’s probably what I thought. Of course, it never happened and I went on with my life. It was just 7 years ago that I was choosing what to play for the first time, I guess you could call that fate. Out of all the instruments that I tried out, the violin was the only thing I made a…

In junior high I was the low man on the totem pole and terrified of playing in front of people. I ended up being the last chair in eighth grade and decided then that even though I was not the best player, I could still practice and try to improve. By my freshman year, I had started gradually getting higher chairs in play tests. My sophomore year, I managed to get first chair in symphonic band and had my first solo in that year’s spring concert. That same year, I also tried out for all state band and district honor band where you have to learn twelve major scales, a melodic and harmonic scale, and the chromatic along with two prepared pieces of different styles, lyrical and technical.…

I began playing the flute in fourth grade, but I didn't enjoy the sound of the high B flats. After constant persuading by my parents, and despite my dislike for the instrument, I joined the marching band at my high school in Arizona. Participating in the marching band, made me enjoy the flute, but just as I was beginning to embrace the instrument, I tore ligaments in my knee and was forced to join the Front Ensemble. I,of course, had no clue how to play a percussion instrument, but after much practice I grasped the basics and began to actually enjoy playing percussion.…

Despite my determination, it became clear to me that my passion for the violin was not matched by the effort that I was putting into the instrument. As part of my instruction on the violin, I participated annually in ASTACAP-American String Teachers Association Certificate Advancement Program. Until…

For almost as long as I can remember, I’ve been playing piano. It has been the most consistent thing in my life and has grounded me during the ups-and-downs of my adolescence. My journey with the piano began as a seven year old at the end of my short affair with the violin. On a trip to my grandparent’s home in Jamaica, I sat at an electric piano with my grandfather and he taught me Hot Crossed Buns. When I returned home, I begged and pleaded with my parents to sign me up for piano lessons, and I abandoned my bow for a bench.…

Music has been a passion of mine for many years, and recently I was given the opportunity to further use this talent to help others. Almost a year ago, the lead pianist at my church moved, and I was asked to assume the post. Although I had been playing for the children and teen services for a few years, this new volunteer position—usually held by an adult with a music degree—required much more responsibility and maturity. I decided to accept the offer, and despite the challenges, the job has cultivated personal growth. Through this experience, I am now an improved instrumentalist, a matured individual, a better team player, and a more compassionate person.…

    The Importance Of Music

By the time of my fourth birthday, I found myself utterly enraptured by my grandfather’s violin. Not merely for the finely tuned sound or the deep mahogany of the wood stain, but for the ability to create something that escaped the limitations of a singular definition - its existence too vast and superb to be constrained by the convent of mere words. My passion eventually lent itself to hours of diligent practice – days, weeks, months, and years passed by as my fingers molded themselves around the strings of my instrument. However, this meticulous persistence was not always fueled by delight. Some days my practice sessions were full of tears and arms that felt like they had cement blocks dragging them down.…
