Personal Narrative: A Day At The Trailhead

Improved Essays
I woke up Friday morning around seven, comfortable in my rainbow hammock, surrounded by tents which my counselors and friends had slept in. Bus days were finally paused, and the hikes were to begin in less than two hours; I was ecstatic.
Eight campers and two staff members piled into the white van we had rented. We only had just enough room for all of our hiking packs to be placed on our laps and in the little crevices we could smush them in. When we arrived at the trailhead we gathered around the map to see what were getting ourselves into, and then stretched for quite some time. Once ready we sat in a circle and shared what we were excited for, what we were afraid of, and what we wanted to accomplish, “I’m excited to get closer with everyone,

The Hunted I didn’t know who I was. I woke up next to a bunch of muddy kids. They all smelled like they haven't showered in weeks. There was two twins, a chubby kid, and probably the skinniest kid I’ve ever seen. Then I realized I smelled just like them.…

We were almost ready to go. There were a few very quibbling moments as we transitioned from the security of the van to the thought of an open trail, a feeling probably comparable to the to the reluctance of diving into a cold lake. I relied on the van door pillar for balance as I groped for my poles, trying my best to hide these difficulties. I don't think that we were really looking at each other now, but through the side of my eyes I believed my daughter tumbled backwards as she was putting on her backpack, fortunately not to the ground. I am almost certain that, like me and despite her practice drill the night earlier, she was also not fully prepared for the weight.…

The trip to a camping site in the middle of a Pennsylvania forest- a trip I would never forget- lead me to the discovery of myself and my transition into adulthood. This trip was through the summer camp I have attended for now eleven years; Liberty Lake Day Camp located in Columbus, New Jersey, is my second home. I grew up in this camp, and when I finally reached the age to become a L.I.T, a leader in training, I was eager to undergo the program with my friends I always attended camp with. This trip was a reward to all the hard work we do as L.I.Ts. Little did I know the annual L.I.T trip to the camping site would be life changing.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

Bags packed, cars loaded, and over thirty boys wide awake to start a new adventure at Camp Hi-Sierra. Every year, my boy scout troop and I take a week long trip to a traditional summer camp to build upon our outdoor skills: sailing small boats, shooting shotguns, and welding metal tools. This year, I was excited to lead these group of men after I was elected to serve as the Senior Patrol Leader of the troop, a position that requires maturity and experience. A long eight hour drive was upon us.…

The day could have possibly never ended since it had began the night before at approximately 11:00 p.m when my friends and I plotted the brilliant idea of embarking on our journey of hiking the Haiku Stairs or also known as Stairway to Heaven in Kaneohe Town. The expedition that the three of us embarked on could be appropriately expressed as the true testament of not allowing a genius plan being squandered by a few obstacles. The adventurous journey that was about to begin was the least of our struggles that were to take place that very night. My close friends, Noah Eddins, Noah Tillman, and I first came to the realization that we must trek to Kaneohe from Kailua Town before our adventurous hike could even have a chance to begin so we determined that we must find our own way to Kaneohe due to none of the city buses running that late into the night.…

My vision started to fail on mile four of the six-mile hike. Small white specks flickered across my field of vision. The next thing to go was my hearing, followed by my ability to walk in a straight line. My platoon sergeant saw the signs of heat stroke and forced me to stop. I should have stopped myself, but all I could think was: you will finish this, or you will die trying.…

The leaves crunched under my black converse as I walked through the nature trail. It was a crisp fall day, too cold for short sleeves, but too warm for a heavy coat. It was Sunday afternoon, and I was trying to escape my duties at home by telling my mom I needed to get outside on such a beautiful day. I sat down on the bridge and looked down at the shining river. The water was twenty feet below me and looked about fifteen to twenty feet deep.…

I would spend my summer doing something I’ve always wanted to do, take a cross-country road trip. Visiting monuments and big cities would probably be one of my favorite parts of the trip. I’ve never been to New York City and I haven’t seen much of Chicago. I would also want visit Washington D.C. and see all the museums, especially the Air and Space Museum. Also on my list of places is Disney.…

After walking for miles, sweat trickled down my face as I sat on a damp log. I was unconvinced that an enormous feat could happen just underneath me, in silence. My eyes focused on the small bodied ants as if they were performers on stage. Methodically, the acrobatic ants clustered together and then sprang forward, grabbing each other in order to make an ant bridge. When I pose questions as to how something so peculiar could happen, I come to the realization that far greater powers are at play.…

Our day started every day around 4:00 – 5:00am with take down and folding the tent to carry in our backpack, filling 4-5 liters of water to prepare for the long hike during the day, putting all personal belongings in the backpack, cleaning the fire pit and the campsite using leave no trace techniques. We then hiked 4-12 miles every day depending on the itinerary. When we arrived at the campsite at the end of the day, we participated in the activities we had signed up for. We would then set up our tents, cook dinner, put all food and smellables in a bear bag and hang it on the tree using a rope, set up a camp fire in the metal ring and end the day around 9:30pm, after a crew meeting to plan for the next day. Day 1: We left Naperville Station…

Have you ever appreciated its surroundings, the soft round pebbles, dust, fallen leaves and branches - some dried and others fresh? Have you ever appreciated the old wrinkled trees bordering it and the ridged ground which marks those who walked down that trail before?…
