The saying goes, “Practice makes perfect.” The ball pushed off the ground away from our opponent and straight into the fence. Advantage. Our opponents had great returns, but they were not very fast paced at all or low across the net. Kyra looked straight at me and smiled. It was like she knew exactly what I was thinking and agreed. I served again and we rallied between other for what seemed like hours. Finally, I decided to put a little more power into my hits to throw them off

Tires crunched on the loose gravel parking lot as I was dropped off at my high school’s tennis courts on the first day of school. With my high school requiring a year of physical education, I opted to take the lifetime sport for I was nervous to compete for a spot on the highly competitive teams my school was known for. I was met at the court by 30 other freshmen with a mixed variety of expertise spanning from the first time to ever hold a racquet to a district ranked player. The district ranked player’s father, Mr. Weaver, was a sophomore chemistry teacher who happened to play tennis professionally in his heyday. Mr. Weaver volunteered to teach the freshman tennis team and to train them the basics before they were transferred to “the real…

I’d rarely hear it. Standing bewildered, I’d look for where the ball could’ve gone. Inevitably, my opponent would chuckle, susceptible to the comedic moment. Soon, I’d notice and retrieve the ball, preparing an overhand serve, overestimating my ability to redeem myself. I'd hit it (often after several tries), and it'd soar far above me, failing to advance, instead hitting my head in the plunge.…
