Personal Narrative: A Day At The Animal Hospital

This week at the Animal Hospital was interesting.

On Monday, I held a dog’s leg down in a ultrasound. Her name was Lola. We were trying to figure out what was wrong inside her abdomen. Luckily, Lola was behaving. It was cute when she fell asleep during the ultrasound. Unfortunately, she has a large mass and tiny gallstones in her abdomen. When the ultrasound technician touched where the mass was, Lola would struggle. Her doctor put her surgery next week. We hope for the best.

It was slow on Tuesday. There was a blind aggressive dog that was boarding at the hospital. Boarding is when the animal is temporary cared for when their owners are away. Anyways, when we were done taking his blood; he took off his muzzle, bit the veterinary technician and tried to run away. The technician and surgeon reacted to the situation quickly. When he got to the hospital, we put a oxygen mask by his face. His face turned blue. We tried our very best until the owners decided to put him to sleep. The dog was very sick to begin with and they didn’t want their dog to go through any more pain. We left the room for the owners to have their last time with their pet. I was trying not to cry. It’s amazing how the technicians and surgeons were able to control their emotions but it was clear that they were also upset. Later on in the day, there was a surgery on a dog that had a tumor on her breast. The doctor had to scoop the mass out with his hands because it was huge. Luckily, it was a big dog so it was easier not to hurt her in the process. It left some mass by the arm because he did not want to paralyze her arm. However, when he was stitching her back up, he noticed that there was still some mass left above her rib cage and the stitches were affecting it. He had to undo the stitches and take out the remaining mass. The surgery was a success and the dog is
