When I was four-year-olds, I was placed into dance classes at the Dance Unlimited Studio in Paradis, Louisiana. I meet most of my phenomenal friends in dance class; especially my great friend Maddie. Maddie was two grades above me, so when I was an eighth-grader, she was a sophomore at my current high school. One day during dance class, she hurled her whole body upon me for a hug and squealed in excitement. "Guess what!?" she exclaimed. I replied with a distorted face, and my mouth ajar. "Guard tryouts are in a couple of weeks!" It dawned on me that she was just finishing her first year on our school's color guard team; or what ever she talked about on a daily basis. She always rambled on about how she was one of the best and only dancers on the guard, and she aspired to be on the "rifle" line for the upcoming year (what ever the heck that was, too). My friends Bailey, Elise, Myah, and I listened to the stories of this "color guard," every single dance class. "You guys should try out!" Maddie stated. It was a different activity, that was never introduced in middle school. I always heard the afternoon announcements speak about picking up tryout packets in the main office, but I never took the move until Maddie brought it to my attention. So I took the leap by grabbing a packet, filling it out, and being at the teaching …show more content…
I financed and hosted my own color guard camp during the summer for children ages 7-14, in hopes to ignite interest in the color guard arts at a younger age. The incoming underclassmen leaned on me for help when it came to weapons. By then, I knew that becoming a candidate for the senior captain role was my calling. I loved my team and I was dedicated to being the best in the state. When I was awarded the captain position, my heart skipped a beat and I instantly went to my journal to plan out the whole year. When I saw the flyer for color guard my eighth-grade year I was perplexed as it didn't specify what color guard was other than an exciting activity that lets you be apart of marching band. I was skeptical that I would actually like color guard but at the first clinic, I knew I had found a family and exciting activity to pursue. Watching the upperclassmen toss rifles, sabers, and flags with such ease and confidence made me excited to learn and achieve that level of confidence. This year will be my fourth year in marching band, I am still in Color Guard and it is easily one of the activities I’m most passionate about. My love to perform on the marching field takes away the anxiety I usually have, throughout the years my confidence has risen…

As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

There’s something amazing about doing what you love and being around other people who share this passion for the activity you’re both involved in; however, this feeling is heightened by being able to teach the basics of the activity and watching others fall in love the way you did. As I enter my senior year this will be my fourth season as a color guard member and my third season as an assistance coach to the Great Bridge Middle School (GBMS) Color Guard. A few weeks before tryouts for marching band my sophomore year, my coaches, Chris and Donny asked for a few volunteers to travel to the three middle schools that filter into Grassfield (Hickory, GBMS and Hugo), and teach the rising ninth graders a few basics, the flag work and dance they needed for tryouts. I decided to help out due to my dedication for color…

High School is a time when you venture out and try new things you probably never considered before. A catalyst in my life was joining dance team at the end of freshman year. John C. Maxwell’s Law of Environment is a law I have lived unconsciously by for my entire life. In this chapter, Maxwell discusses the choice of changing who you spend your time with in order to grow. He states, “the people with whom you habitually associate are called your ‘reference group,’ and these people determine as much as 95 percent of your success or failure in life.” Growing up as a kid at Ford Elementary School, I always made friends with those who, like me, always did their homework and enjoyed reading books. I remember that I was always afraid of the “bad kids” at the school and subconsciously wanted nothing to do with them.…

My childhood was quite ordinary as well as atypical. My childhood could be defined by the two words, ‘carefree’ and ‘dance’. I had started dancing at the age of 4, and took dance very seriously, taking as many as three classes per week, and participating in various competitions. While my classmates were busy taking classes outside of school going to math, English, and science tutors, I spent majority of my outside-school time dancing and preparing for upcoming competitions. At school, my teachers frequently characterized me as confident, diligent, optimistic, and friendly, but has below-average math skills and often recommended that I get a math tutor.…
