Throughout my life, my friends and family call me “Chef Steve”. They call me this because I always end up cooking and revising my mom’s food. In my strong opinion, I know the extra ingredients to make the food taste more appetizing. With the right seasoning and amount that I put in the crawfish is as easy as learning how to breathe. My most wished for food of all time is garlic crawfish, not only because of the taste, but for the process of how its made.…

The Hunt I am all warm in my camo attire with my bow hugging the tree behind me. I watch as sky comes to life and leaves crunch as the dew falls on them. My father sitting at my right side, dozing, his head bobbing every once in awhile. I hear the faint noise of something crunching and look above me to see a squirrel perched on a small branch. I smile and nod my head letting out a faint chuckle.…

I come from a poor family. I never had brand-name shoes or video games, or even a Lisa Frank binder and stickers like my friends at school, but I always had plenty of food in the fridge at home. My family never went hungry in spite of the fact that we were raised by a single mother who made her living as a coffee shop waitress. I did not know, till I was a teenager, that my mom bought the majority of our groceries with food stamps. It never seemed odd to me that she went to the grocery store one time a month and stocked up on milk, sugar, lunchmeat, chicken legs, hamburger meat, and most importantly, coffee.…

The grilled cheese sandwich is a classic American food for children and adults alike. It is simple and quick to make. All that is required is a few slices of bread, cheese, butter, and a pan to cook in. When I was young and had just gotten off the bus after school, I would rush to the kitchen and ask my mom to make me one of these gooey treats. Fresh out of the pan and dripping with cheese (sight), I would irrepressibly shove the steaming sandwich into my mouth often burning my tongue (touch).…

“Congratulations!!” read one post on a friend’s Facebook wall, the day after she landed an office job in her field. “So amazing!” read another. “Are you ready for your big-girl job?” asked a third well-wisher, accompanied by a GIF of Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope. “I can’t believe I finally have a real job” was the text she sent me a few days later, from the comfort of her desk, where she had been hired to do operations work for an organization she had once, a few years prior, interned for.…

My dad started to grill some steak, cheeseburgers, and sausage. I could smell the food from a distance, it smelled amazing and could hear the meat sizzle on the grill. As guests came they each got their plate of food and could hear them talking about what they did in summer and also complimented my dad on the food. After I ate my delicious food, I played soccer with my brother and some friends for a short time because it was a hot day. I later went to get some dessert and some fruit before more of the guests came.…

At a younger age, I would say I believed that I can only trust myself and my mother, this is because as a little kid my mom would always tell me that there are bad people in the world and that giving them any information about anything can be very harmful. But as I grew up and realized what was actually happening in my country I knew there were millions of others that were suffering against the “bad people” and we could only do something about it if the whole community came together to help. It was at that time when I was about 25, when I started to put some effort into trying to establish more just conditions within my country especially after the implication of extremely high food prices. This is when I started my first strike involving my…

A Beautiful Mind is a compelling and powerful movie that explores the Nobel Laureate winner and professor John Nash in his rise, fall, and recovery dealing with schizophrenia. As the film opens, Nash is a genius level student in 1950s America working on applying to graduate school. He is introduced to his roommate, a tall pale guy names Charles. They have a rough start, but eventually warm up to each other as time goes on. The very first time that I realized something was a bit off about Nash, was the scene directly following this where Nash is challenged by one of his fellow grad students to a game of Hex.…
