Personal Narrative: A Child Called Food

Improved Essays
It was in Florida, a pouring night of rain. An annoying sound, like a high pitched beeping, was replacing the silence within the store. He was waiting behind the counter containing rows of assorted sweets, like a group of diverse children. Each shelf within the store measured about six feet high and were filled with what many would call “food”. The man behind the counter stood counting the many dollar bills due to be handed out for change.
One customer had been brought inside of the store. He was an African American, a young boy with short black hair and had the eyes of an innocent child. He wore a black hoodie, absurdly too big for his body as if he were wearing a large plastic bag. He stood about six feet tall and showed no signs of misbehavior.

He knew this dark skin and long, black hair of mine was dangerous.…

Tired, overworked, and ready to go home, she was faced with a split second decision many would have considered criminal. She saw a bill fall to the floor. As she took a quick glance around the restaurant, and straightened her wrinkled apron, she grabbed the $20 bill off of the cracked tile floor, and shoved it in her pocket. After clocking out and starting the engine in her run down honda accord, she started to bite her nails, which were already too short from worry. Knowing the newfound money should have gone in the tip jar for everyone to share, she pulled out of the dark, lonely parking lot and headed to the grocery store for formula and diapers, hoping there might be enough left over for a pack of Merit Ultra Lights. Imagine one night after work you’re cleaning up the restaurant and you happen to find money.…

Although it may seem unbelievable, it is true, how we balance the amount and what type of foods we eat in our daily lives can benefit or adversely affect our bodies. So what makes people choose to eat in a certain manner and put specific foods in their bodies? Well, through examining my own relationship with food I have discovered that dietary restrictions, parents’ cultural and personal preferences associated with specific foods can cause a person to lean favorably towards or turn them off from consuming foods, thereby molding an eating pattern. From a young age, my parents have always enforced the idea of eating healthy constantly badgering me to eat my vegetables or have a piece of protein with my meals. Although I might not have understood why their reprimanding was important, over the course of these last few weeks in biology I have come to realize that having a sound diet in many ways encompasses what it means to be healthy and live life to its fullest. By actively moderating, recording, and learning about what I have been eating I can now clearly understand that my parents were right to encourage healthy eating in my home. My parent, specifically my mother, was always the one who cooked and influenced my healthy eating at a young age. When looking at my food logs for this…
