Career counselors help college kids, adults, and unemployed people get a job. They help by going throughout the job application process with their clients. (NAMI, Mental Health By the Numbers ) This puts the demand for mental health counselors higher and higher every year. Having a mental illness can take a toll on a person’s everyday activities. Some mental illnesses include: severe depression, dementia, autism, anxiety, and post traumatic stress disorder. Becoming a mental health counselor or therapist can be very rewarding in the regard that it could save someone’s life. In relation to most other therapists or counselors, the first step to becoming a mental health counselor is to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Some of the core courses would be General Psychology, Theories of Personality, Abnormal Psychology, and Life Span Human Development.
