Personal Narrative: A Career In The Veterinarian Field

Improved Essays
It was 2015, I was assisting my uncle, a veterinarian, in an orthopedic surgery on a dog. The air smelt heavily of alcohol, used for sterilization, my arms were starting to ache as I held the dog’s leg steady for amputation. The rush of adrenaline I felt kept my hands motionless, as I watched my uncle line up the bone cutters. The pressure built between my fingers till I felt the final snap of the bone. It was in this moment, and many moments proceeding, that I made my decision to pursue a career in the veterinarian field. To reach this goal I have challenged myself academically by taking honors and advanced science courses. Throughout my high school career I have taken advantage of every opportunity to better myself academically and personally.

What is summer? The majority of kids, if asked, will tell you that summer signifies the end of school, the start of fun and freedom. You will find some kids at the pool, the mall, or sleeping in. Many stay home and play video games, while others go to the beach. Instead of spending my time at the pool or with friends, I hung-out with furry, four-legged beast and some rambunctious two-legged, little people.…

I can call upon a wealth of experience that has proved for me that this is the career that I want to pursue whilst simultaneously preparing me for it. During my part-time job at Sanfield Stud and voluntary work at Dressage Horses International Ltd, I learnt about the associated mechanisms of equine management, breeding and development, as well as a vet's role within them. Furthermore, my time spent at several farming establishments (four weeks in total) exposed me to the basics of veterinary medicine within a farming environment, such as vaccinating lambs against Watery Mouth and learning the main aspects of pig production during my placement at a large breeding company. Moreover, my time at two veterinary groups (three weeks total), exposed me to procedures such as the rectifying of a cow's displaced abomasum. My placements at both of these clinics has furnished me with superb experience of working with ailing animals, whilst also granting me the opportunity to develop professional competencies and important social skills.…
