Personal Narrative: A Career In The State Department

The dusty debris clouded my feet as I moved through the ruins of the neighborhood. The pungent smell of the blood overwhelmed my nostrils, and my eyes watered partly from the effect of the dust and primarily from the overwhelming sadness and fury that warred inside of me. The once polished commercial buildings were wrecked; broken windows, crumbled pieces of the wall, and gang graffiti served as evidence of the disaster that struck this neighborhood. Silence ran throughout the area, and no human presence could be detected. The evening sunlight projected a red tint over the wreckage, like spatters of blood, and indicated the upcoming arrival of the rebels; who carried out their attacks predominately during the night. The rebels, the ones who …show more content…
As I slowly worked to get myself into the State Department, where I hoped to jumpstart my career, I went through the vigorous process of written and oral exams. During the months where I was on the waiting list for employment, I felt useless. Never had I been more frustrated as I lingered at home, my Ogygia during this time; while my goal of being a United States Ambassador was so far away. I could do nothing but hopelessly wait for that one call that confirmed my job in the State Department. One day, I received a call at 5 in the morning. While it was brutal to get myself out of bed to reach for my phone, and it was hard to restrain myself from yelling down the phone to whoever woke me up at this unholy hour, I still managed to do so. The moment the calm, polished voice at the other end told me the news that I’ve been hired, it was like sipping the first cup of coffee at noon; adrenaline flowed through my body and my spirit …show more content…
However, love seemed to always find its way. It was not long until I married a man I loved dearly. Though, the career that I chose was not meant for a woman in love. A few years after my marriage, I was assigned to go to the embassy in Iran. My main duty was to get a handle on the rebels that threatened to start a nuclear war. Additionally, I was commanded to transport the American residents away from the war-inflicted country. My husband was adamant about not letting me go, but little did he know I was more stubborn than him. We had argued for days about my assignment in Iran. He made several attempts to intervene my trip to Iran, and pleaded with me to stay at home instead. I understood his concerns for me, but I couldn’t help but feel as if he was my Calypso. Finally, I put my foot down and told him that I wasn’t going to neglect my duties to this country. My husband knew from the look in my eyes that it was no longer up for discussion. He begrudgingly respected my decision, and I soon flew over to

World War I was a conflict that claimed the lives of millions of soldiers and altered the lives of countless others. Shortly after the War, two novels surfaced, Generals Die In Bed by Charles Yale Harrison and All Quiet On The Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, that became influential in our understanding of how the soldiers lived. Each novel provides a firsthand account from a soldier’s point of view on one of the most brutal wars ever to have been fought. The novels portray war without the common popular veils of patriotism and heroism. General Douglas MacArthur stated “The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war”.…

As I stared across the bullet-torn battlefield I wondered how I ended up here; hiding behind a crumbling wall, clutching my gun as though it were a lifeline. How the young kid I'd once been now bore a dirty, camouflage patterned uniform. There I was, contemplating my life in the middle of a battle. I shouldn't have been surprised when a hand suddenly shot out in front of my face and smacked me upside the head. It was so unexpected that I nearly stumbled out from behind the rubble and right into the bullet whizzing by.…

Not everyone can say they carry a map of where they live wherever they go. This is one of the few perks that come with residing in the Mitten State: I can whip out my hand anytime and point to exactly where I’m from. For the past eighteen years, I’ve built a life in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a conservative, affluent community where everything seems perfect. For eighteen years, I’ve covered imperfections, censored thoughts, and allowed my light to be dulled. I may not have lived anywhere else yet, but the real-world is out there waiting -- and I’m ready for it.…

When I began my State Department career as an FS-07 just over a decade ago, I never in a million years thought that I would be sitting here today writing a biographic statement outlining my qualifications for a PO position. As I started collecting my thoughts for this statement, I looked back and reread my previous EERs; it truly has been an amazing journey rising through the ranks, and I honestly think the time I spent in each of the ranks between FS-07 and 02 has provided me a fuller understanding of the Department and helped me become the officer that I am today. From being control officer for cabinet level delegations to Baghdad and London to being Visa Chief in the world’s second busiest immigrant visa section and now managing a team of…

My clothes hung limply off my body, dripping with the water that was flowing from the grey stained sky. The mud that was once hard turned into slush in seconds and splashed everything as I attempted to navigate my way through the trench only using the few metres that I could see in front of me. The sounds of battle cries pierced through the fog, along with the explosions of guns firing bullets…
