Personal Narrative: A Career In The Field Of Archaeology

Improved Essays
The field of archaeology is one that requires two key qualities: curiosity and determination. It is a field of study rooted, fundamentally, in asking questions, and seeking out new opportunities. Whether an archaeologist is attempting to date an artifact, or piece together the lives of people who came before them, an archaeologist must always ask multi-disciplinary questions, try out new theories and methods, and gain new perspectives to make new discoveries or challenge old ones. It is also a field of study that mandates dedication, as the archaeologist not only must hone their skills on a dig site, but also academically, as they learn requisite languages, and hone academic writing abilities. It is because I consistently exhibit these qualities of curiosity and determination that I am a worthy recipient of this scholarship.

In my opinion, the purpose of the film "Curse of the Axe", appears to be an attempt to glorify the field of archaeological research. The filmmakers attempted to demonstrate that archaeologists can teach First Nations about their history. This film suggested that the Huron-Wendat had little, to no knowledge about their past. I feel that the filmmakers, even if they depicted an interesting portrayal of pre-colonial Aboriginal history, did so in a biased manner. In contrast to the last chapter of "Ontario Archaeology" which highlighted hostile relations between Aboriginals and archaeologists, the movie made it seem as if Aboriginal communities depend on archaeologists for knowledge of their ancestors.…

I maintained this plan, arriving at Boston University as an archaeology major but after several semesters of study realized that it wasn’t the exact path for me. I began to grow my appreciation of museums, admiring how they could ignite wonder, curiosity, and learning in myself and others. I realized this was where I felt most at home. Therefore, I decided to change my major to art history, while retaining an archaeology minor, and explore history through the lens of artist’s interpretations and ideas.…
