Personal Narrative: A Career In Pursuing A Career

Veterinarian, welder, lawyer, teacher, nurse, the choices are endless and it was extremely difficult to settle on just one. As high school graduation day rapidly approached, I felt pressured and hurried to make a decision on what I wanted to be when I “grew up”. Little did I know that it would be none of those, but instead, a career more difficult and strenuous, petroleum engineering. Growing up, my three siblings and I always had what we needed; however, rarely did we get what we wanted because the combined income of my parents was shy of just $50,000 a year. The simple environment I grew up in influenced my career field choice greatly as I never wanted to worry about the financial aspect of life. My parent’s low income also meant that we never got the opportunity to go on extravagant family vacations; therefore, our family vacations consisted of camping in the mountains or a weekend out at the nearby lake. These basic family vacations weren’t bad, in fact, I learned to love the outdoors, and I have developed an interest in working outdoors. Not only do I have an interest in working outdoors, but I also have an interest in traveling. Once an engineer has obtained a bachelor’s degree, they can then take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
