Personal Narrative: A Career In Pursuing A Career

Sometimes, when you lose, you win. A loss often shows you parts of yourself that you never knew existed. Fourteen years after I began working at our local newspaper, The Daily Union, the new publisher called me into his office and dealt a devastating blow. The company was being restructured, and as a result, my position as the graphic design artist and sales representative of the real estate magazine that I had devoted six years of my life to was being eliminated. I would instead be relocated to the Circulation Department in charge of distribution. At that moment, it felt as if the bottom was dropping out of everything I had worked so hard to achieve. The job in the newspaper circulation department that I was being forced to take entailed delivery of our various publications within a fifty mile radius. Additionally, I was in charge of newspaper carriers, fixing the newspaper racks and managing each publication’s paperwork for the Pressroom. It was unskilled labor that involved heavy lifting and mechanical knowledge, which I had neither strength nor mechanical ability. However, I swallowed my pride and took each new task one day at a time. My flexibility in this new situation and my open mind lead me to learn many new things and to realize that I am more capable of drastic change than I had known. The job was difficult, but surprisingly, I became more physically fit than ever before. Additionally, this job gave me the freedom that I had never known, due to the fact that I had been stuck behind a desk for past fourteen years. I was able to make my own schedule, and I loved driving around completing the deliveries. This gave me time to contemplate where I would go from here. I certainly did not want to make delivering newspapers and magazines my life’s work, but I am thankful for the push out my comfort zone. I was given time to think about what I wanted my life’s work to actually be and the goals that I needed to set to arrive in that
