During my gap year I have gained experiences and have met people who’ve inspired me to become an osteopathic physician. The clinical experience that I gained through being a chiropractic assistant will last with me for a lifetime. Working with patients in a one on one setting allowed my skill set to grow as an eager, and young applicant. The doctor I had the pleasure of working for, Dr. Etheredge, exemplified amazing patient care. He also ran his practice in a honest and ethical way. His passion for helping patients with not only their back pain, but also all their musculoskeletal issues inspired my journey of pursing a career in osteopathic medicine. Nyugen, of the Villages Health Center. She is an exceptional physician and shadowing her was such an honor and gift. As I would watch Dr. Nyugen, I realized that she always would speak with her patients at a level that they could understand and feel comfortable. She would mentor them in ways I have never seen done before, and treat them always as a first priority. I also learned from shadowing other osteopathic physicians was that each time they stepped into an exam room their concern was the patient, and not just writing a prescription to solve a problem. Dr. Nyugen treated the patient as a whole; and in doing so emphasized to me the importance of not just treating a complaint but seeking to discover the root of the problem. Dr. Nyugen was always working as a hands on physician even when the issues were as minuet as refilling medication. Working in a large retirement community with patients who had lists of medication as long as their grocery lists allowed her hands on approach to really pay off. Using this approach she was able to come to the conclusion that certain medications were no longer necessary for the patient or that even some were doing more harm than good. Through my many hours put in with Dr. Nyugen, I eventually got to witness first hand manipulations performed by a DO. Dr. Nyugen helped a woman with her migraine pain by

I was originally interested in becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic and discussed this field with my own chiropractor. From my conversations with him and my extensive research, I discovered that chiropractors are limited to the extent they are able to treat their patients, which did not align with my vision as a medical professional. For example, they cannot administer trigger point therapy, perform surgery, or prescribe medication. Through my research, I learned that because of recent changes in insurance laws, chiropractic visits have been reduced and in some cases limited, which would make it challenging to treat patients in an effective manner.…
