As I would watch Dr. Nyugen, I realized that she always would speak with her patients at a level that they could understand and feel comfortable. She would mentor them in ways I have never seen done before, and treat them always as a first priority. I also learned from shadowing other osteopathic physicians was that each time they stepped into an exam room their concern was the patient, and not just writing a prescription to solve a problem. Dr. Nyugen treated the patient as a whole; and in doing so emphasized to me the importance of not just treating a complaint but seeking to discover the root of the problem. Dr. Nyugen was always working as a hands on physician even when the issues were as minuet as refilling medication. Working in a large retirement community with patients who had lists of medication as long as their grocery lists allowed her hands on approach to really pay off. Using this approach she was able to come to the conclusion that certain medications were no longer necessary for the patient or that even some were doing more harm than good.
