Personal Narrative-A Career In My Writing

If writing was a meadow of delicate wild flowers on a shinnying spring day than spelling would be the prickly weed hiding low amongst the flora to sting the unwary. At age ten I was an enthusiastic reader. I’d read anything from science fiction and fantasy to nonfiction nature journals. Much of that enthusiasm came from my mother’s love of literature and her joy at having daughter who wanted to be as bookish as she was. Little did I know at the time that despite mom’s pride in my bookworm tendencies in her aspect as a home school mom she was very concerned with the problem of my bramble patch handwriting and untamed spelling. That is until she found a way to teach me to pull weeds. The first letter arrived on an afternoon of deep blue skies and a hot bright sun. As the mail truck pulled away my younger brothers and I bolted from the house bare feet smacking on stovetop concrete and …show more content…
She must have known I would care much more about the quality of my writing if it was to be on display for my grandmother. Their plan worked. As the summer progressed and letters were sent back and forth I look forward not only to getting a letter but to writing my own in reply. Writing had gone from an agonizing process of erasing and poring over the dictionary for the correct spelling to a fun way to share my thoughts. I’ve been grateful to mom for making writing could be enjoyable activity in my life but I now realize that while she might have been trying to mere improve my penmanship and curb my rampant spelling she was also teaching me two subtler lessons. The first was that even the annoying school chores should be treated with enough respect to accomplish them well. The other was that through her “You can figure it out” treatment when I went seeking help I learned how to do my own problem solving. These are two things I have found invaluable in

When I was a child I always though about business. I wanted to know how things worked, how money worked. I started watching my grandfather write his invoices, deposit checks, talk to people as if he knew them but they had just met. Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

Receiving a grade of a 92 out of 100 on a paper is not necessarily an unacceptable outcome for many people, yet this grade was one of my lowest grades out of all my papers in English 1101. The 92 my literacy narrative earned inspired me to revise this paper for the final. My literacy narrative was my first college paper and after the two papers I have written in this class I thought I was more equipped to fix my errors within this paper. I chose to write a short story as a rendition of my literacy narrative. I thought it would be interesting to write a story through my mom’s perspective, reactions, and impact on my growth as a reader and writer.…

Over the first semester I feel I have been appropriately challenged in the area of writing we have done this year. I learned many new skills, but the most important one involves English and how to write properly. As for the first writing, I really did not understand what was right and what was wrong. Because I never paid close attention to specific rules in how to write. I truly believe it has been hard for me.…

I have always been a reader, I don't think there has ever been a time in my life where I haven't loved it. My mom is a teacher, so as a child reading was part of our everyday life. We had annual passes to the library and would attend the mommy and me events. I remember when I was about four or five, I would sneak a flashlight into my room and read Wizard of Oz. Although I couldn't actually read the words out of this huge chapter book, I would make the story up, pretending I knew what I was reading.…

Parents and teachers often have trouble deciphering what they wrote, and also students struggle with reading their own notes sometimes. Graham remarks that, “All beginning writers struggle with fluency and legibility to some extent, and that inevitably affects their approach to composing. Young writers typically cope with the multiple demands of handwriting and composing by minimizing the composing process (planning, organizing, etc.)” (Graham, 2010, p.50). If there is early attention put into handwriting about student’s legibility there will be a decrease in the likelihood of them becoming poor writers in the…

My journey with literacy has been a part of my life and began before I even entered school. During my early days you would say I was a “repeater”. My parents always sat down and read to me.…

In the fifth grade, I wrote a thirty-page mystery style book. My teachers all praised my writing capabilities, and my classmates would come to me for guidance with writing their essays. I cherished reading, and, as a punishment, my momma and teachers would take away my books to force me to pay attention. I kept this infatuation of writing and reading all through middle school, but it began to whittle down in high school. In all of the essays I had ever written, I never once received a grade lower than a B on them.…

381). It is important for educators to understand that children need specific experiences with written texts in order for them to grasp a stronger understanding about the ‘communicative nature of written texts’ and ground specific purposes of the texts that have been written (Fellowes & Oakley 2016, p. 392). This understanding could be beneficial to me as a practitioner, where I am required to instruct writing for young children that allows them to move from unconventional forms of writing to more conventional ways (Watanabe & Hall-Kenyon…

Writing is a broad topic that may be defined through various definitions. An important way to look at writing is a “permanet” way to put your thoughts, ideas, and knowledge onto paper in a distinct number of ways. When the teacher gave instructions, I copied what the other students did to follow through. However, when it came to reading and writing, I was lost. We were assigned to make a list of all the activities we did over the summer; so while everybody else picked up their pencil and began to write, I sat there with a blank piece of paper on my desk. Of course, everybody’s spelling was not going to be perfect, but I didn't even have the words to express myself. Reading wasn’t any better.…
