Personal Narrative: A Career In My Writing Career

Murphy’s Law states that “in any field of endeavor, anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” Yes, this is a bit of a morose thought. But, it is true nonetheless. This “happy” theory most often shows itself in my life within my writing career. Not so much in things “going wrong.” Instead, it shows itself in the absence of work when I have time to work and the abundance of work when I am busy living life.
Thankfully, my freelance writing job is a part-time gig, meaning income from writing doesn’t have to pay all my bills. It simply has to supplement my income. Regardless of that fact, though, there is nothing quite as aggravating, frustrating or downright exasperating as my inability to count on steady work in my freelancing writing career.
Yes, I have been able to determine certain patterns throughout my years of freelancing experience. For example, work always wanes near holidays and gets a bit less abundant in the summer months. I

I like to have my week tentatively planned out. I want to know when I will work, when I will go get groceries, when I should run my errands, etc. Unfortunately, planning that way is simply not possible as a freelance writer. It just doesn’t work. I can’t even count the times that I have had hours with nothing to do here at my house, no errands to run, nothing, which is the ideal time to work, right? Well, I can guarantee that days like this will be dead in regards to writing. I don’t know why, call it my real-life version of Murphy’s Law, but I will never have work to do when I have spare time. Nope, it will be when I have to take my Grandmother to the doctor, go on a field trip with my kids, run my son to soccer practice, go help prepare for a drama at church, pay some bills, must make a trip to the store, have a doctor’s appointment myself, or have something (anything at all) scheduled for that day. This is when I will have work. It NEVER

An idea that I found important in Stephen King's memoir "On Writing" is his statement "stopping a piece of work just because it's hard, either emotionally or imaginatively, is a bad idea. Sometimes you have to go on when you don't feel like it, and sometimes you're doing good work when it feels like all you're managing is to shovel shit from a sitting position." Personally, I found this statement inspiring. Often, I find myself creating excuses which keep me from writing. This is often because I believe a certain topic is hard to write about, or I am not particularly interested in my subject.…

How do professional writers deal with writing blocks? Professional authors have battled with writer's block since the start of literature itself, famous authors such as Mark Twain even “offered advice” for writers to overcome writer's block: ““The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one,” (Van Cleave , Ryan, et al). This loss of words and inspirations strickens the author with loss of creative process and stop the production of their lifeline: their own writing; through interviews, a couple of writers have explained how they deal with writers block and how they find joy in working.…

My writing experience: I didn’t start to read until I was in first grade. Every week we would go to library to check-out two books and take a test on the books we read on a computer. Every day in English we read a short story to ourselves then we would play games dealing with the story to make it fun. To be honest I never really did a lot of writing in Elementary , Middle, or High school so I can’t pinpoint when I started writing. In essay writing I learned its always good to express yourself with your own opinion.…

Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

In the past my writing experiences have been both rewarding and disappointing. Disappointing because I seem to get a type of "stage fright" regarding the content in which I am to write about and my fear of failure. When the subject of what I am writing about is difficult and hard to find a positive outlet for, i.e. I am having a hard time getting in touch with my subject, the process of writing a research paper or summaries or any kind of extensive assignment becomes laborious and then procrastination starts to creep in. Despite how much I plan to take better care of my limited time I still manage to wait too long to start the project and then I am extremely stressed because I waited too long to start it.…

As a 22 year old fresh off the heels of university, I landed a well-paid big kid job within a few months of my graduation. At the time, I was ecstatic because it meant that I wouldn't have to worry about supporting myself. Thing is, there's a reason why corporate gigs pay well-- you sacrifice everything. I did well financially, but emotionally, I was bankrupt. During my near 2 years of chasing work/money, I missed graduations, births, and the important aspects of my life.…

Really, the only kind of writing I do outside of school is text my friends. It’s been a pretty long time since i’ve written a story or something outside of school. The reason for that is because I don’t like to write without a specific subject. To be honest, I’m ok with writing, as long as it has some sort of a subject. I absolutely despise having to write some random story that doesn’t have any control, it’s just not fun.…
