Throughout high school, I got along well with my teachers and got many As. But that all changed in my junior year, when I took U.S. History 2 with Mr. McLaren. He had been Teacher of the Year at River Edge. The twins down the street raved about all that they had learned from him. But there I was, two months into the school year, falling farther and farther behind. Moreover, my varsity field hockey took time away from my studies. When I did get to work on assignments, usually on Sunday afternoons, I had trouble linking the readings and writing assignments to the previous week's lectures. I lived in fear of getting called on by Mr. McLaren, dreaded tests and quizzes, and shook every time he handed back a graded assignment. I was never a quitter but didn't know what to do about the problem. I needed a good grade in U.S. History 2 on my transcript! Then I spent a holiday weekend with Kara, a friend from summer camp who attended high school in Austin. She explained an unusual approach to teaching U.S. history at her high school: the flipped classroom. …show more content…
The teachers make videos on their computers and post them to a site; students follow a link to that site, watch the videos, and use Google Forms to submit a summary and ask questions. The next day, the teachers answer questions students have uploaded and review key points. Then the students debate about the issues in the video or work in small groups on legal cases and historical documents, applying the previous night's video lecture. According to Kara, she's never liked history more nor understood it any

The hardest thing I’ve ever went through? Let me take you back to almost three years ago to a very cold Thursday morning in January. I was sitting in history class when suddenly something very strange happened; the announcement speakers came on. To most people it would seem like it was a very typical day to day event to listen to announcements; but at my school announcements were rarely ever said. My classroom got completely silent; to the point where you could have heard a pin drop.…

On Friday 10/9, English class was one to remember. Every day besides Wednesdays I have English class and it is defiantly a class to look forward too. My teachers are Mrs. Archabal and Mrs.Wheeler, two of the best teachers in the school that are credible. We call Mrs. Archabal “Arch” and we call Mrs. Wheeler “Wheels”, they don’t mind because mostly everyone at Thayer calls them by their nickname. So, on Friday, we had English class second period…

My years in high school were quite thrilling and adventurous. Starting as a freshman, I had no idea where I was going and what was going to be expected of me. Over the years I became involved with extracurricular activities which led to my primary interest I had developed in technology and the sciences. As a freshman I joined the Students with Future Interests in Technology Club, Spanish Club, and Robotics Club. These clubs stayed with me till I graduated high school and I have loved them ever since I got involved in them.…

Every year, I start my English 10 Accelerated class with joy and intrigue. I am always curious to see which students will stand out. Initially, Isaiah Charles stood out, but for the wrong reasons. There were concerns after initial conversations with him. Isaiah Charles had seemed to be a young man that seemed rigid and fixed in his understanding of the world.…

Before high school, I always thought I was an average student, but when I transitioned into high school, people started to point out that I had potential. I began to work harder than I had ever before and I began to accelerate in every course. This never took a toll on me till the tenth grade, when my mental health started degrading. Anxiety was my first foe. During the beginning of the tenth grade, I had set high expectations for myself and it began to affect my life greatly For instance, after finishing the test, I would think about just one specific question that I thought I completed wrong.…

It was the first day of my second year in Tomball ISD. I walked into my second period, Texas History, with a Mrs. Brough. At first glance, Mrs. Brough seemed to be a little too excited and the state of her desk with several coffee mugs seemed suspicious. It was in this unorganized classroom and with this giddy teacher that I found my love of history. Mrs. Brough was a short and stout woman who never stopped smiling.…

The rest of the year was great to me, I finally saw the rainbow. I gained many new friends and I was/am doing fairly well in my classes. I overcame an obstacle of mine that was really large, and I am proud of myself for doing so. I finally got to see what it looks like when the clouds part. I went from being a stress mess to a straight success (maybe not success yet, but soon).…

Instead, I was surprised to see my old Core teacher, Professor Michael standing behind me, shaking his head in disappointment. “Hey Linda,” he said calmly, “Wish I could say that it was nice to see you.” “Professor?” I questioned, still discombobulated from the current events. “What are you doing here?…

Though I am not even half way through my high school career, I feel as if I can still be a help to those who are just beginning. High school is probably the most important part of your life that you are responsible for in our teenage years, so it is important not to mess it up. There are a few concepts that I have figured out by myself that I wished someone would have told me. Those of which include never procrastinate, think about your future, learn how to manage your time, and do not settle for less than your best. My first recommendation is that you don’t procrastinate.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

When I moved to Springfield Township from Cheltenham Township, I really despised the sudden change. I disliked almost everything about it but what I did not know at the time is that by my senior year I would eventually love this school as I molded it into a place that I wanted to be at. During the end of my freshmen year, I found myself with a new view of how I was going to cultivate at Springfield Township High School. After meeting a valuable presence that will have forever leave an imprint on me, I decided that I needed to get involved with school to become apart of it. From that moment, the following year, I signed up for the Academic Team meanwhile continuing the Word Language Club which I had joined Freshmen Year and Girl Scouts which…

School is a laborious job that requires full attention and in my early years, I never really thought about how the classes I took could very well determine my future when applying for colleges. My parents always told me to focus on my school work and take hard classes, but I never really took that to heart. Freshman year, my grades weren't the best, I know I could've done so much better, my laziness could never take me anywhere. Heading into my sophomore year, my GPA was rather low and when my guidance counselor finally opened my eyes to putting more effort forth after she saw me struggling, she taught me a lot and I am forever grateful.…
