Personal Narrative: A Career In Fitness

While breaking down equipment one day after teaching a class at Nelson Fitness Center, I mentioned to another instructor how regrettable it was that I could not find a viable career path where my interests intersected. As a junior concentrating in Public Health and Anthropology, I have always had an affinity for health and fitness, art and design, and entrepreneurship. That day, the instructor at Nelson gave me the name of someone through whom I could finally develop the dream career which, to date, had always seemed to elude me. As I quickly learned, Sadie Kurzban is a Brown graduate with a rapidly-growing start-up, ((305)) Fitness, a Miami-themed dance cardio gym. Through my contact with Sadie, I have established a potential internship opportunity where I can work under the leadership of the Chief Operating Officer, Sam Karshenboym, who is also a Brown alumna.

Working at ((305)) will allow for me to put both my academic learning and extracurricular interests in practice as I gain work-specific skills that I can take to new entrepreneurial endeavors. Through this position, I hope to synthesize

Whereas my experiences to-date have been limited to a blissful bubble, working at a well-funded gym at an elite university, at ((305)), I will be introduced to real-world high-stakes decision making in the ultra-competitive fitness marketplace. The inimitable experience of working closely with the founder of a growing start-up and gaining exposure to all aspects of the business, from publicity to operations, will provide an intensive crash course in how a business is started and run that is much closer to an apprenticeship than an internship. I will use my time at ((305)) as an opportunity for intellectual growth as I gain hands-on practical skills in entrepreneurship which I can further explore during my remaining time at Brown as I delve in the STEM field with economics, computer science and entrepreneurship

MPH Competencies In the beginning I visualized opportunities for the YMCA such as: introducing new communication and education avenues such as Pinterest, taking a public health systems approach with Missouri State University to encourage use of Activetrax and the importance of nutrition, find realistic opportunities for the YMCA to enrich the nutrition education part of Activetrax with basic statistical methods, apply research principals to class count data, and develop public health interventions to evaluate Activetrax. These opportunities are mentioned as part of the expected MPH competencies for the internship plan and so they as well as three Discipline-Specific Competencies and three Interdisciplinary Core Competencies will be in the following…

My life has been centered on sports for the majority of my life and it’s one of the things I’m most passionate about. When I grow up I imagine myself being a sports trainer or running my own gym for athletes to train in just like me. So for my may program I wanted to find an internship that could replicate this notion. From a friend’s recommendation I found first athlete, a sport’s training gym, to be the perfect fit and I knew it would teach me more about what goes on behind the scenes of training. I see myself as being a capable leader and I strive for success so the book I read throughout may program was “Be the First Believer”, by Ed Deutschlander, where he covers all the values a great leader should have and why successful business people and athletes are so successful.…
