There is a moment for everyone where they realize their goals and aspirations. Once they do, nothing will stop that person from achieving their goals. For me, my whole life has led up to me pursuing a filmmaking career, and nothing is going to stop me.

Film is one of many influences that made me the man I am today. In my pursuit to becoming a filmmaker, I have been blessed with friends that shared similar interest in filmmaking, opportunities to work on independent film productions as well as other short film documentaries, and motivations to be a smarter and better person. More recently, I have taken film production classes at Bayview Hunters Point Center for Arts & Technology, or BAYCAT, and had the opportunity to edit a short advertisement for the online dating company known as Zoosk. I even worked on Scary Cow Production films over the previous spring and summer.

When I was a kid, growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, I was surrounded by a lot of negative influences. Prostitution, drug dealers, gangsters, and much more. I also had the displeasure of suffering through post-traumatic stress disorder after I was raped by my older brother. As a kid, I was not fully aware of the negative influences around me nor what it meant to be raped. I was not fully aware of most things at that age. In a way, the pain of experience had built up for years until I realized what had actually happened and how heinous it

I had a hard time following a long with the film Casablanca, so I tried hard to pay extra close attention. Whenever a character was speaking I felt as though I had missed something because a lot of the time I had no clue what was going on. The end was a bit melodramatic. When the man is shot and the rest of the soldiers show up the dialogue basically says, "Strasser has been shot. " They carry him away and that was that.…

Try being still long enough to find the right image you want to capture through the lens of a camera. Finding the right shot takes time, which each shot you want it to be precise and just right. You always want as a photographer to make the first shot the best one mostly so you want have to take the time to find another shot. Imagine how frustrating it is thinking you’re first shot is the best until you look at the blurry and unfocused picture. The first time you look at that picture you think to yourself that you can just retake that same picture and will look different the next time.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

“Congratulations!!” read one post on a friend’s Facebook wall, the day after she landed an office job in her field. “So amazing!” read another. “Are you ready for your big-girl job?” asked a third well-wisher, accompanied by a GIF of Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope. “I can’t believe I finally have a real job” was the text she sent me a few days later, from the comfort of her desk, where she had been hired to do operations work for an organization she had once, a few years prior, interned for.…

Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

In an ever-diversifying world, especially here in America, a challenge many of us face is cultural boundaries. It is not uncommon for us to be oblivious to other cultures because it isn’t one of our priorities to be knowledgeable about them. While pursuing a career in physical therapy, I am sure to treat a multitude of people from all over the world. It is imperative to my profession that I am exposed to as many interactions with cultures, other than my own; to increase the rapport I hope to have with my patients, and to become a more well rounded individual. To develop my proficiency in culture I was blessed to interview Ms. Alessandra Ramos, a 21 year-old biochemistry student with dreams of working with children as a doctor of medicine, whom I met as a new member from the Pre-Health Society, a club I am an active member in at California State University Dominguez Hills.…
