“What do you want to do when you grow up?” It seems that among the young adults I know who are preparing to enter their college years that many have no idea how to answer this question and the others have such diverse ideas, all of which seem to them to be distinct possibilities but each requiring different education paths. Truly, I seem to be in the minority, as I know exactly what I want to do. I desire a career in criminal justice.
Growing up with a parent in law enforcement is often sufficient to turn offspring away from wanting any part of the criminal justice profession. Over the years, I learned a good deal about his work and the associated dangers like arresting drug dealers, defending himself against attackers, crazy car chases, and criminals shooting at him. The criminals and the crimes themselves that he experienced on a daily basis would unnerve most. For me it was a constant fear. From the moment, Dad walked out the door and until he returned, I was afraid for what might befall him. I smile now when I reflect on the fact that my father never showed fear. When it came time to start a new shift I remember the routine of his pinning his badge on his chest, placing his hat on his head, and the silhouette of his proud demeanor as he walked out of the door, his head held high.
My life’s experiences were such that I was convinced at a young age that there were no rewards in law enforcement. I repeatedly observed people demonstrating hatred for police . . . until they needed them. This fact never deterred my father, however. He saw people at their worst and never condemned or judged. My dad saved lives and worked to change

At a very young age, I was shown the great rewards one could receive by demonstrating acts of love, kindness, and compassion for others. I knew that I was very fortunate in who my parents were, and recognized that I had excellent role models to inherit these qualities from and observe them being put into practice. My father was a preacher, and these same qualities of love and empathy could be found at the core of his every sermon (Riggs). As I grew older, I realized that other men, who had been put into positions that boasted a similar power, abused it and instead decided to preach their own selfish messages to whatever gullible ears they fell upon. I was blessed, though, with a father who never focused on throwing words of shame and guilt at others.…

As the child of a single mother who is a police officer I had to learn the skill of self-sufficiency quickly. If my mother was working night shift I could not knock on her bedroom door when I had a nightmare because she was out protecting the public. I learned quickly that being a police officer is dangerous work and that the possibility that she might not come home one day is an ever-present one. Unlike many cases I have heard of, I never rebelled against my mother and her chosen profession. It is easy to see why many children of first responders do rebel.…

I was drawn to the perspective in Left-Realist Criminology that recommended that the police work for the community they serve and should not be looked at as the oppressors. That is a very progressive way of thinking that can be implemented in 2017. Being a police officer and having numerous opportunities to speak with children. It is sometimes disheartening to hear them talk about their perspectives of the police officers as being the people who will take them to jail or issue them a speeding ticket. They do not see the law enforcement officer as being servants of the community.…

Law Enforcement Interview Police officers are seen under the radar in everyday life. By under the radar I mean, we notice them driving around town, or when we are slamming on our brakes passing them going twenty miles over the speed limit on the interstate, or when we all pretend to be perfect drivers when we notice them trailing us from our rear view mirrors. What we don’t notice is who the police officer that’s giving us a ticket is, or what their ranking is or how well trained or educated they are. Police officers are easily disliked by the public because of their jobs of handing out tickets, or making necessary arrests but all they’re trying to do is keep the community safe.…
